Temple Itinerary & Overview

There are Shiva temples in various places across Maharashtra. However, temples that house both Shiva and Parvati together are very few. One such temple where they are enshrined together is located in the village of Phursungi on the Pune-Solapur highway. This Shiva temple, which is the presiding deity of Phursungi, always sees a constant flow of devotees.

Upon arriving in the town-like village of Phursungi, located near Pune, the Shambhu Mahadev Temple comes into view. The old temple has been renovated, and the new structure is built entirely of white marble. Due to the distinctive carvings on it, the temple looks extremely beautiful. At night, the beauty of the temple is further enhanced as it is bathed in various colors by multicolored electric lights.

Mahadev temples are generally seen to be built of black stone. Villagers believe that this temple, being made of marble, might be the only one of its kind in Maharashtra. The renovation of this temple cost approximately two and a half crore rupees, which was contributed by the villagers. The renovation of the temple continued for eleven years.

The temple premises are spacious, and the entrance gate has been constructed using sturdy stone. On it, the mantra ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ is inscribed, and above that, on the pinnacle of the entrance, are white-colored idols of Shiva and Parvati. There are two tall lamp pillars (Deepmalas) in front of the temple. Beside the temple steps, there is a large trident (Trishul) and a drum (Damaru). The temple has a gold-plated spire, and a drum and trident have also been erected beside it.
There are exquisite carvings on the pillars and walls of the assembly hall (Sabhamandap). In the front part of the assembly hall, there is an idol of Nandi carved from black stone. This black idol, situated in the middle of the all-white temple, stands out prominently. On the left side of the sanctum sanctorum (Gabhara), there is an idol of Ganesha, and on the right side is the Ram Panchayatan (idols of Ram, Sita, Lakshman, and Hanuman). These idols, carved in marble, are beautiful.

In the sanctum sanctorum, there is a rare north-facing Shiva-Parvati Lingam. (There are two Lingams on a single base. They are believed to be symbols of Shankar and Parvati.) The serpent deity (Nagadevta) is also present alongside. Such a Shiva Lingam is rarely seen elsewhere. The sanctum sanctorum is spacious, and many people can meditate here at the same time.

It is said that the Bel tree in the temple courtyard dates back to the eighteenth century. Locals say that the former temple used to be in the shade of this tree. On the fifth day after Padwa, the largest fair in Pune is held in Phursungi. At this time, the temple is decorated with attractive lighting. The temple lights up due to the illumination and laser show. Beautiful flower decorations are also done at this time. Thousands of devotees come here for darshan during Mahashivratri and the fair. Cultural programs are organized during the Urus. At the same time, wrestling arenas and bullock cart races are organized. Mahaprasad is also arranged for the devotees during this time. Devotees have faith that the Mahadev of this temple fulfills their vows.
