A Trip to the Khajuraho Temples

Khajuraho is a popular city in the Madhya Pradesh state of India. The city is known for its ancient erotic temples that were built during the ancient times. According to an official report from the Archaeological Survey of India, there were 85 temples that were initially built but today only 22 exist.

These exquisite temples attract a number of tourists from all over the country and this place is a social hub for the Lesbian, Gay, Transgender and Bisexual (LGBT) community. They are known for the various sculptures and statues that portray different sexual positions as defined in the Kama Sutra.

Some of the attractions of Khajuraho are:

1. Western Temples: This group of temples is most popular amongst the tourists. The sculptures are dedicated to lord Shiva and Vishnu. These sculptures are located on the left hand side of the entrance to the temple. One of the finest figurines that have been produced here is that of Kandariya Mahadeo. This sculpture has gained a lot of acclaim due to the ruins of Chausath Yoginis which point to this particular figurine. The Matangeswara Temple is the only holy place that is still worshipped today by the worshippers.

2. Eastern Temples: This temple is situated on the eastern side of the Khajuraho temples.The temple of Parsvanath is the biggest and the finest temple that is situated here. This temple is dedicated to Adinath but it was then offered to Lord Parsvanath. The sensitive art of the temple is its main attraction and it doesn’t have any sculptures portraying any sexual poses or figures. There are a number of other carvings that belonged to Lord Adinath that are situated nearby to the temple. Many other Hindu temples of Khajuraho have been made according to this temple.

3. Southern Temples: The group has only two popular temples. The Duladeo Temple is situated in the main temple complex and is made up of wood completely. This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and there are a number of sculptures and figurines of Lord Vishnu that have been carved out wood. Chaturbhuja is another popular temple that is situated in the far off village and is known for its 3 meter high statue of Lord Vishnu.

4. Khajuraho Dance Festival: This is a popular dance festival where dancers from all over the country come and participate here. This seven day festival showcases the classical dance forms of India. This festival is organized in the backdrop of the magnificent temples of Khajuraho.
