Temple Itinerary & Overview

The Vashistha Rishi Mahadev Temple is situated at Wadali, nestled in the lap of the Ajanta mountain ranges in Buldhana district and within the sacred land of the mythological Dandakaranya. Among the seven Shiva temples established by the Saptarishis in the Mehkar region, this site of Maharshi Vashistha is considered extremely significant. It is believed that Vashistha Rishi, the family preceptor of Shri Rama and a seer of the Rigveda, performed rigorous penance on the picturesque banks of the Man River and consecrated the Shiva Linga here. The famous ‘Saptarishi Temple Parikrama’ (circumambulation) of Mehkar begins from this very temple. Before sunrise on the third Monday of the holy month of Shravana, the atmosphere resonates with the chants of ‘Har Har Mahadev’ in the presence of thousands of devotees who arrive for the pilgrimage.

According to Hindu astronomy, the cluster of seven stars visible in the northern sky is called the ‘Saptarishi Mandala’. These seven stars represent the seven Vedic sages. According to local faith and research, an exact replica of the positions of these Saptarishis in the sky has been created in the form of temples across seven villages in Mehkar taluka. This is considered a very rare and unique celestial-geographical arrangement. These temples include those of Maharshi Vashistha (Wadali), Maharshi Gautama (Gomedhar), Maharshi Vishwamitra (Vishwi), Maharshi Parashara (Pathardi), Maharshi Valmiki (Varwand), Maharshi Bagdalabhya (Delap-Uti), and Maharshi Durvasa (Durgabori). A unique feature of all these seven temples is that they are all dedicated to Mahadeva and are believed to have been established by the respective sages. The temple at Wadali is the primary temple in this series and is known by the name of Vashistha Rishi.

Vashistha Rishi has been given a very high status in Vedic literature and the Puranas. He is considered a ‘Manasputra’ (mind-born son) of Lord Brahma. He was one of the sons born from the breath of Brahma at the beginning of creation. He is the seer-sage of the seventh Mandala of the Rigveda. Vashistha Rishi’s greatest identity is that he was the family preceptor of the Ikshvaku dynasty (Solar dynasty). He was the guru of King Dasharatha and subsequently of Shri Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata, and Shatrughna.

The most famous conflict in the Puranas is the rivalry between Vashistha and Vishwamitra. Many believe that this story is reflected in the geographical layout of Mehkar taluka. According to this legend, Vishwamitra was a powerful Kshatriya king. Once, when he arrived at Vashistha’s ashram with his army, Vashistha provided royal hospitality to the entire army with the help of his divine cow, ‘Kamadhenu’. Impressed by this miracle of Kamadhenu, Vishwamitra asked for the cow. However, as she provided the ‘Havyakavya’ (offerings for sacrifices), Vashistha refused to give her away. In the ensuing battle, the Kshatriya power of Vishwamitra proved ineffective before the ‘Brahma-teja’ (spiritual power) of Vashistha. Distressed by this defeat, Vishwamitra performed severe penance and began to compete with Vashistha. Even though he destroyed the hundred sons of Vashistha, Vashistha did not lose his composure. Finally, when Vishwamitra attained the status of Brahmarshi through his penance and Vashistha acknowledged him as a Brahmin, this rivalry ended.

The village of Vishwi in Mehkar taluka is considered the site of Vishwamitra Rishi, and Wadali is considered the site of Vashistha Rishi. These two villages are a few kilometers apart. The geographical situation here has given importance to the story of the Vashistha-Vishwamitra conflict and their subsequent reconciliation in the Puranas. According to local folklore, these two sages must have lived in these nearby villages, competing and communicating with each other. It is believed that during this period, Maharshi Vashistha consecrated the Shiva Linga at Wadali. This temple is recorded in the ‘Central Provinces and Berar District Gazetteers – Akola District, Volume A’. There is a small settlement of the tribal community in the temple premises. The government gazetteer also states that these people consider Vashistha Rishi as their deity.

The temple is located near the banks of the Man River. In the temple courtyard, there is a tall, tapering lamp pillar (Deepastambha). The structure of the temple consists of a large open Mandapa, Nandi Mandapa, Darshan Mandapa, Sabha Mandapa, and the Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). The Nandi Mandapa is located in the space between the open Mandapa and the Sabha Mandapa. In this Nandi Mandapa, there are two Nandi statues on the ground between four stone pillars. The four stone pillars of the semi-open Darshan Mandapa are adorned with various sculptures and carvings. In the niche to the left of the entrance of the Sabha Mandapa, there are idols of Vitthal-Rukmini, and to the right, there is a Shiva Pindi. The niches in the Sabha Mandapa contain ancient stone idols of various deities. In the Garbhagriha, there is a Shiva Pindi made of a single piece of stone in the center of the floor. It is adorned with a metal mask and a serpent canopy. On the wall in front of this Pindi, an image of Lord Shiva is depicted.

It is a belief in Hinduism that worshipping Lord Shiva during the month of Shravana brings happiness and prosperity. Therefore, on the third Monday of Shravana, thousands of devotees from the district perform the circumambulation of all these seven temples. This pilgrimage begins after having the darshan of the Shiva Linga at this temple in Wadali. On the third Sunday night of Shravana, all the pilgrims gather at this Shiva temple. Around midnight, after performing Jalabhishek (water offering) to Mahadeva, the circumambulation begins with wet clothes. The pilgrimage concludes after having the darshan of the Shiva Linga at the Vishwamitra temple in Vishwi. This circumambulation must be completed before sunrise on Monday.
