Temple Itinerary & Overview

‘Siddheshwar’ is one of the most revered names among the thousand names of Lord Mahadeva. The Lord of Siddhis (spiritual attainments) is Siddheshwar. It is a deep-seated belief that through Yoga, Japa, Tapas, devotion, and Tantric worship methods, one attains Siddhis by the grace of Mahadeva. The Shaiva sect is also known as the path of Tantra-Mantra. Many famous temples of Siddheshwar are scattered across India. One such renowned temple is situated in the city of Solapur. On similar lines, there is an ancient and famous temple on the banks of the Sindphana River in the village of Pimpalvandi, known as ‘Dhakti Alankapuri’ in Beed district. Devotees have a profound faith that the presiding deity here, Siddheshwar Mahadeva, fulfills their prayers.

This temple is believed to be about eight hundred years old. Some scholars are of the opinion that this temple might have been built during the reign of the Kalyani Chalukya kings in the eleventh century. Given the Hemadpanti style of stone masonry and the inverted hooded serpent sculptures on the pillars, it is possible that this temple dates back to the twelfth century. However, there is no concrete evidence available to determine the exact period of the temple. According to some scholars, this temple may have been built during the reign of the Yadava King Ramdev Raya. Nevertheless, there is a consensus among all scholars that this temple was built between the eleventh and twelfth centuries.

On the road leading to the temple, there is a primary welcome arch at some distance from the temple. The arch features two platforms on both sides with ornate pillars. Above these pillars is a balcony, adorned with Kuta and Shala style spire sculptures; there is also a Devakoshthaka (niche for deities) in the center. The temple is surrounded by a sturdy fortification wall. Since the temple is situated at a higher elevation than the road, one enters the courtyard by climbing about eight steps carved in stone. To the right of the steps is the Samadhi of Mahant Abadev and a Tulsi Vrindavan. There are safety railings on both sides of the steps, and Tulsi Vrindavans are built on high platforms. In the courtyard in front of the temple, there are platforms with Deepmalas (lamp towers). Seating is available for devotees in the courtyard.

In front of the temple, on a high platform, stands the Nandi Mandapa. In the Nandi Mandapa, four ornate pillars stand on square bases at all four corners. In these pillar shafts, various geometric shapes such as squares, hexagons, octagons, and circles can be seen. The ceiling features a circular floral pattern. Hooded serpent sculptures are carved on the pillar bases and brackets. In the center of the Nandi Mandapa, on a platform, is the black stone idol of Nandi. The Nandi is adorned with a decorative cloth, a garland of bells, and ornaments. The roof of the Nandi Mandapa has a dome-shaped spire topped with an Amalaka and a Kalasha.

The temple structure consists of a Sabha Mandapa (assembly hall), Antarala (vestibule), and Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). There are two platforms on both sides of the open-style entrance of this Sabha Mandapa. The Sabha Mandapa has four rows of four ornate pillars each. All pillars stand on square bases, and the shafts feature geometric shapes like squares, hexagons, octagons, and circles. The ceiling between every four pillars has a circular floral pattern. In the Sabha Mandapa, near the entrance on the right side, is the first sanctum. The door frames of this sanctum are decorated with leaf and flower carvings, and there is a Ganesha sculpture on the lintel. There is a Chandrashila (moonstone) at the threshold. The entrance is fitted with ornate wooden shutters. Inside the sanctum, there is an idol of Ganesha on a Vajrapitha (throne). In the Sabha Mandapa, there are niches on both sides of the entrance to the Antarala, where brass masks of the deity, used during festivals, are kept. Beyond this is the spacious five-sectioned entrance to the main sanctum. At the base of the door frames, sculptures of gatekeepers, Ganga, and Yamuna are carved, while the upper sections feature leaf, flower, pillar, and vine motifs. There is a Ganesha sculpture on the lintel. Above it, on the upper frame, are spire sculptures. At the threshold, there is a Chandrashila and a Kirtimukha. The sanctum is deeper than the Antarala. In the center of the sanctum floor is the Shiva Linga. A brass serpent holding a canopy is placed over the Shiva Linga, and a copper Abhishek vessel for water dripping is hung from the ceiling. Near the back wall of the sanctum, there are idols of Mahadeva and Parvati on a throne. The outer walls of the temple feature niches on all three sides, containing idols of various deities. The roof of the temple has a parapet wall with decorative motifs on all sides, which also contains niches and idols of various deities. The three niches near the entrance in the parapet contain idols of Mahadeva, Ganesha, Parvati, Lakshmi, and Saraswati. The roof of the sanctum containing the Ganesha idol has a dome-shaped spire topped with an Amalaka and a Kalasha. The main sanctum of the temple has a seven-tiered, approximately thirty-foot-high circular spire. The first and fourth tiers of the spire each contain eight niches with idols of deities. The seventh tier of the spire features divine sculptures, while the other tiers are decorated with leaf and flower motifs. The top of the spire is crowned with an Amalaka and a Kalasha.

Beside the temple in the courtyard is a small temple of Maruti. Descending some steps from the side of the Maruti temple, one reaches the Samadhi of Gosavi Maharaj. Behind the temple in the courtyard is the Vitthal-Rukmini temple. There are steps from the courtyard leading down to the bed of the Sindphana River. A Goshala (cow shelter) is run by the temple trust in the temple premises. There is a spacious building in the courtyard for cultural activities and wedding ceremonies.

Mahashivratri is the main annual festival celebrated here with great enthusiasm. A fair is held for Siddheshwar on the occasion of Mahashivratri. Thousands of devotees from the surrounding areas come here for the Darshan of the deity. At this time, the area takes on the appearance of a marketplace as shops selling various items are set up. Festivals like Shravan month, Chaitra Padwa, Dussehra, Diwali, Makar Sankranti, and Nag Panchami are celebrated in the temple. There is a large crowd of devotees on Mondays, full moon days, new moon days, Pradosh, and Ekadashi.
