Temple Itinerary & Overview

The tradition of the Shaiva sect is ancient in India. Lord Shankara is the presiding deity of this sect. Among the many names of Shankara, Nilakantheshwar is a popular one. To protect the universe, Mahadeva consumed poison, which turned his throat blue, and thus he came to be known as Nilakantha. Later, the suffix ‘Ishwar’ was added, giving the name Nilakantheshwar. There are thousands of temples of this protector of the universe, Nilakantheshwar, across the country. One such famous temple is located at Sakharpeth in the city of Solapur. Devotees believe that the living Mahadeva here grants their wishes.

This temple was built in the year 1942. At that time, a Shiva Linga brought from Kashi was installed in the temple. Because of this, devotees believe that taking darshan here bestows the merit of a pilgrimage to Kashi. The Nandi here is five and a half feet tall and nine feet long. The temple is situated in the bustling Sakharpeth area of Solapur. The temple is surrounded by a sturdy fortification wall. The entrance gate in the fortification has two platforms on both sides, topped with circular, tapering, ornate pillars. The pillars feature frames decorated with floral motifs. Within the frames, there is an arched torana, and below the torana is a devakoshtaka (niche). The idol of Mahadeva is placed in this niche.

In the temple courtyard, there are buildings adjacent to the fortification wall. These include residences for the temple staff, a community hall, the temple office, a school, and rooms for various other purposes. There are seats in the courtyard for devotees to rest. The temple structure consists of a sabhamandapa (assembly hall), antarala (vestibule), and garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). It appears that this sabhamandapa was built in more recent times. The open-style sabhamandapa has six circular pillars on each side. These pillars support beams and the roof. The pillars and the beams above them are painted in a golden hue. The ceiling features circular patterns and brass bells.

In the sabhamandapa, facing the entrance of the antarala, there is a large black stone idol of Nandi on a vajrapitha (pedestal). The idol is approximately nine feet long and five and a half feet tall. The Nandi is adorned with a carved saddle cloth, a garland of bells, and a necklace of small bells. The entrance to the antarala, which is a few inches higher than the sabhamandapa, has four ornate stone pillars with capitals. The four dwarf pillars above the capitals are connected to each other by three arched curves. Padmapadukas (footprints) are placed on a table here.

Further ahead is the silver-plated entrance to the garbhagriha. The door frames are decorated with vine motifs and lotus patterns, and there is an idol of Ganapati on the lintel. There is a torana above the entrance and a kirtimukha on the mandarka. The entrance has ornate wooden shutters decorated with silver enamel work. In the center of the garbhagriha stands a two-foot-tall Shiva Linga. The Linga is adorned with silver ornaments and a brass cobra holding a canopy over it. A trident is placed to the side. In the garbhagriha, against the back wall, there is an idol of Ganesha in a shrine on a pedestal. There are latticed windows in the garbhagriha for ventilation. There is a circumambulation path (pradakshina marga) around the exterior of the garbhagriha.

On the roof of the garbhagriha, there are Nandi sculptures at all four corners. In the center, there is a circular, tapering shikhara (spire). The shikhara features a lotus petal circle at the base and vertical ridge carvings above. At the top of the shikhara, there are two amalakas stacked one above the other, followed by a kalasha and a flag. Maha Shivaratri is the main annual festival celebrated here with great enthusiasm. On this occasion, thousands of devotees from across the district come for darshan and to fulfill their vows. Programs such as bhajans, kirtans, and mahaprasad are organized at the temple on this day.

During the month of Shravana, there is a massive crowd of devotees for darshan on every Monday. On the last Monday of Shravana, a mask of Mahadeva is placed in a silver chariot and taken in a procession around the village. Thousands of devotees participate in this procession, amidst the sound of drums and the throwing of gulal. Festivals like Nag Panchami, Raksha Bandhan, and Krishna Janmashtami, which fall during the month of Shravana, are celebrated with special fervor. All other festivals and occasions, including Chaitra Padwa, Dussehra, Diwali, Kartik Purnima, and Kojagiri Purnima, are also celebrated in the temple.
