Although this city receives the least rainfall in Maharashtra, its location on the banks of the Neera River makes it prosperous. Many parts of this city and the areas around its temples feature beautiful gardens. Their excellent upkeep makes visiting these temples a delightful experience. The Anandi Ganesh Temple here, offering a similar experience, is a revered place for thousands of devotees as well as tourists. Within this Ganesh temple complex, there is also a Mahadev Temple with a unique architectural design.
The Anandi Ganesh Temple is situated on a small, picturesque hill adjacent to Akluj town. This Anandi Ganesh idol was consecrated in 2001 by the Mohite-Patil family, a prominent political lineage of the region. While the beautification of this temple complex was underway, a Shivpindi (Shiva Lingam) was discovered underground at some distance from the temple in 2002. In 2005, after the ritualistic consecration of the Shivpindi, a Shiva temple was erected at the same spot. Extensive tree plantation was carried out in both temple complexes. Consequently, today, the area boasts a large number of flourishing trees. These include mango, chikoo (sapodilla), coconut, and many other varieties of trees. Additionally, medicinal plants have been cultivated in some areas.
Private vehicles can reach the parking area located some distance from the temple. From there, one has to walk to the temple. However, as this winding path passes through lush trees, the walk does not feel arduous. Benches are provided at various points along the path for devotees and tourists to rest. The cleanliness of the surroundings is commendable. It is evident that the trees, plants, and even the lawns underfoot are meticulously maintained. After approximately a 10-minute walk from the parking area, one enters the garden of the Ganesh Temple. This garden showcases a variety of blooming flowering plants. A paver-block paved path leads from this garden to the Ganesh Temple. Coconut trees line both sides of this path. Before reaching the courtyard of the Ganesh Temple via this path, one encounters large, pristine white Nandi idols. In reality, these are water tanks. The purpose behind this is to encourage devotees to cleanse their hands and feet before entering the temple.
The temple is situated slightly elevated from the ground level. The temple’s structure comprises three Mukhmandaps (entrance halls), a Sabhamandap (assembly hall), and a Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). The marble pillars in the Mukhmandaps and Sabhamandap are intricately carved to appear as if they are standing within lotus flowers. The first two pillars in each of the three Mukhmandaps are connected at the top by arch-like artistic carvings. From here, one enters the Sabhamandap. The Sabhamandap is entirely open. A unique feature here is that, apart from the Garbhagriha, the temple has no walls anywhere else. In the center of the Sabhamandap, on the ground, there is a marble tortoise idol.
Within the enclosed Garbhagriha, a beautifully sculpted Ganesh idol made of marble rests upon a Vajrapitha (diamond pedestal). The upper two hands of the Ganesh idol hold weapons. The lower right hand is extended in a gesture of blessing, while the left hand holds a laddu. Ganesh wears a crown on His head, and a chhatra (umbrella/canopy) is placed above it. In front of this idol, on a Vajrapitha, there is a small brass Utsavamurti (processional idol). This Ganesh idol, adorned in rich garments, appears serene and benevolent.
In the Devkoshtakas (niches) within the walls along the Pradakshina Marg (circumambulatory path) of the temple, there are beautifully carved idols of various deities. The small shikhars (spires) atop the three Mukhmandaps of this temple feature Amalaks (finials) and Kalashas (pinnacles). At the apex of the domed shikhar above the Sabhamandap, there is an Amalak and a Kalasha, similar to those on the Mukhmandaps. The main shikhar above the Garbhagriha has five tiers and contains many small subsidiary shikhars. At the forefront of the main shikhar, there is an Amalak and a Kalasha.
This temple complex, spread over a vast seventy acres, appears clean and beautiful. Many people visit here to experience the dual blessings of divine darshan and natural beauty. At some distance from this temple is the Mahadev Temple. The design of this two-storied temple is unique. The ground floor of this temple houses an assembly hall. On both sides of the assembly hall’s entrance, there are two semi-circular staircases leading to the temple on the upper floor. Adjacent to them is a Deepmaal (lamp tower). Upon reaching the upper level, one finds some idols carved from Krishnashila (black stone) in the ornate Devkoshtakas along the edge. The structure of this temple is also similar to that of the Anandi Ganesh Temple. In the open Sabhamandap, there is a Nandi idol in the center, and the Garbhagriha houses a carved Shivpindi. From this elevated Shiva temple, one can enjoy a panoramic view of Akluj town.
In this picturesque complex, which houses these two temples of Ganapati and Mahadev, a Dhyan Mandir (meditation hall) and a Sanskrutik Bhavan (cultural center) have also been constructed. Many cultural programs are organized there by the temple committee. Numerous social programs, including health camps, are also held there. Mahaprasad (sacred food offering) is distributed daily in the morning at this temple. On Mondays, Tuesdays, Sankashti Chaturthi, and Mahashivratri, these temples witness a large influx of devotees. Devotees can have Darshan (sacred viewing) of Anandi Ganesh daily from 7 AM to 10 PM.
This sacred temple stands as a testament to deep spiritual devotion, ancient architectural grandeur, and rich local cultural traditions.
The sanctum sanctorum houses the divine idol consecrated according to ancient Vedic traditions, surrounded by serene courtyards and traditional temple architecture.
