Temple Itinerary & Overview

Adorned with natural beauty, the Radhanagari taluka has become prosperous and fertile due to the three dams of Radhanagari, Kalamma, and Tulsi. It is perhaps because of this region, surrounded by rivers and dense forests, and its mysterious and inaccessible atmosphere, that esoteric methods of worship have developed here. Spiritual practice centers known by various names such as Vamachari, Tantric, Aghori, Tamasi, and esoteric exist throughout the country. The Vitlai Devi temple in Durgmanwad is considered a center for both Tamasi and Satvik forms of worship. Devotees believe that this village deity is awakened and grants the wishes of those who pray to her.

It is believed that the original abode of the Goddess, located at the source of the Tulsi River, dates back approximately eight hundred to one thousand years. At that site, there are various idols used in the worship practices of Tantric practitioners. It is said that, realizing it was not possible for ordinary devotees to reach this temple surrounded by dense forest, the Goddess descended and established her second abode in this village at the foothills of the mountain. In the sixteenth century, the renowned practitioner of Shakti worship, Narayan Swami, was [blessed/instructed] by Vitthalai Devi. It was here that the divine vision was granted. This proves that this temple is at least five hundred years old. According to a legend, in ancient times, the demons Tarakasur and Vyaghrasur had wreaked havoc in this area. Goddess Vitlai destroyed those demons and delivered her devotees.

In front of the temple, there is a two-tiered platform built of carved stone, upon which stands a Deepmala (lamp tower). On the second tier of the platform, there are half-relief sculptures of elephants at all four corners, topped by a circular two-tiered Deepmala. This Deepmala has २४ individual arms for lighting lamps. To the right of the Deepmala, there is a Mukhamandapa (entrance porch) structure featuring two square pillars. In front of the Mukhamandapa, there is a square stone pillar embedded in the ground. The two-storied Sabhamandapa (assembly hall) of the temple is of an open design, with six circular pillars on each of its two sides. The outer pillars feature lotus flower carvings near the base. All the outer pillars are connected to each other by arched gateways. Above the arches, there are ३२ niches for deities in the outer walls. In the center of the Sabhamandapa, there are two rows of five circular pillars each. Here, approximately १० feet There is a platform that is wide and 20 feet long. During festivals, the palanquin of the Goddess is placed on this platform, and various religious rituals are performed. Further ahead, there are tiger sculptures on the steps at the entrance of the Antarala (inner sanctum vestibule). The door frames of the Antarala are adorned with floral and leaf carvings, and Lord Ganesha is seated on the Lalatabimba (the central lintel). There are doors on the right and left sides to exit from the enclosed Antarala. The Antarala has pillars facing the entrance and on the outer side, which are connected to each other by semi-circular arches. Above the arches, there are small windows.

On the Vajrapitha in the sanctum sanctorum stands the four-armed idol of Goddess Vitthalai, carved from black stone. The Goddess holds a sword, a damaru, a trident, and a nectar vessel in her hands. Behind the idol, the silver prabhavali features bodyguards on both sides and a kirtimukha at the top. The prabhavali is intricately carved with floral and leaf patterns. Beside the stone idol is the brass utsavamurti. On both sides of the Vajrapitha are brass tiger statues and idols of other deities. The ceiling of the sanctum sanctorum is adorned with coconuts and other items wrapped in multi-colored cloth. Objects have been tied and hung up. It is said that these are types of mystical spiritual practices.

Above the sanctum sanctorum, there is a five-tiered octagonal spire that stands at a height of 51 feet. Each of the first four tiers features eight niches, with eight smaller spires placed in the spaces between them. Both the niches and the smaller spires are adorned with finials. The uppermost tier of the main spire consists of a canopy, topped by two stacked amalakas, which are crowned with a finial. This Urushringa-style spire is decorated with a total of 65 finials. A staircase is provided on the outer rear side of the temple to access the upper floor. Special festivals are celebrated in the temple on occasions such as Navratri, Dussehra, Diwali, the full moon and new moon of every month, as well as Ashtami.

The five-day annual fair begins on Phalguna Krishna Trayodashi. During these five days, various programs such as Bhajans, Kirtans, Pravachans, Jagran, and Gondhal are organized in the temple. During this time, the Goddess is seated in a Palkhi and taken on a procession through the village. Thousands of devotees from the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Goa visit during this pilgrimage to seek the blessings of the Goddess and to fulfill their vows.
