Temple Itinerary & Overview

Velaneshwar is a famous destination among the many important religious and tourist spots in Guhagar. Blessed with nature’s abundant grace, this village enjoys a beautiful coastline, which is why it is always bustling with tourists. Religiously, this place is considered significant due to the ancient and vibrant Velaneshwar Temple located here. With a history spanning approximately 800 to 900 years, this temple is situated along the seashore amidst groves of coconut and areca nut trees. Devotees hold a firm belief that, true to its name, Lord Velaneshwar grants their wishes without delay.

Many stories are told regarding the origin of the Velaneshwar shrine. It is said that the temple was first built in the 12th century; however, after being neglected for many years, only the Shiva Linga remained. Around the 17th century, a devout woman named Annapurna Gadgil noticed a cow going to a specific spot every day to shed its milk. Surprised by this, she informed her husband and others. Upon searching, they discovered a self-manifested (Swayambhu) Shiva Linga. Being a devotee of Shiva, Annapurna took the initiative to build the sanctum sanctorum, which remains the core of the temple today. According to another legend, in ancient times, Lord Mahadeva appeared here in the form of a Linga, pleased by the penance of Bahiravbhat Gadgil. At that moment, a loud roar was heard, flames emerged from the rocks, and Lord Mahadeva granted a direct vision to Bahiravbhat.

Regarding the construction of the temple, it is said that Ramaji Damodar Gadgil was a wealthy merchant (Savkar) in Velaneshwar. He was very humble and kind by nature. He had lent a large sum of money to a gentleman, but the man was unable to repay the principal or the interest. Recovering that amount seemed almost impossible. One morning, while Ramaji Gadgil came for the darshan of Velaneshwar as part of his daily routine, he was deep in thought about this bad debt. He prayed to Velaneshwar, saying that if the gentleman repaid the loan without him having to ask, he would build a temple for Him with that money. By the grace of Velaneshwar, the gentleman repaid the entire loan with interest within a short time. True to his word, Ramaji built this temple with those funds. The samadhi of this Ramaji Gadgil is located within the temple premises.

The ghat road descending towards the temple from Guhagar and the sight of the vast ocean ahead fill one with joy. The Velaneshwar Temple is situated in a nature-rich area featuring a wide stretch of soft sand on the beach, coconut palms, and the roaring sea. One enters the temple courtyard through a two-storied gateway within the fortification. Inside the main entrance, on a platform, stands a 40-foot-tall lamp pillar (Deepstambh) and five lamp towers (Deepmalas). Saffron flags are placed on both sides of the lamp pillar. In the center of the lamp towers, there is a Nandi carved from a single stone. In this temple courtyard, there are five temples including those of Velaneshwar, Ganpati, Gopalakrishna, Rameshwar, and Kalbhairav. Additionally, there are two stone-masonry wells. A unique feature of these wells is that despite being only a few feet from the sea, the water remains sweet and delicious.

The structure of the Velaneshwar Temple consists of a Darshan Mandap, Sabha Mandap, Antaral, and Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). The Darshan Mandap and Sabha Mandap are of semi-mandap design and appear to have been built at a later period. The wooden carvings in the Sabha Mandap and the intricate work on the stone pillars are distinctive. It is said that the first Diwan of Akkalkot, Gadgil, renovated this temple during the Peshwa era, which is why some signs of the Peshwa period can be seen here. Outside the Sabha Mandap, in a small temple on a platform, there is a large brass Shiva Linga with a five-hooded serpent over it. Outside the sanctum, there is an idol of Ganpati holding a rosary (Akshamala) in one hand and the other in a boon-granting gesture (Varada Mudra). There is a circumambulation path (Pradakshina Marg) around the sanctum. Inside the sanctum, there is an approximately 5 to 6-foot-long, monolithic, and self-manifested Shiva Linga. A serpent deity is coiled around this Linga, and a brass mask of Lord Shiva is placed inside (not in the center) of the Linga. Unlike other Lingas, this one does not have the typical arrow-shaped top; instead, the stone appears slightly raised. Behind the Shiva Linga are the idols of Parvati and Ganesh.

Adjacent to the Velaneshwar Temple is the temple of Kalbhairavnath. The legend associated with this is that a stone kept getting caught in a fisherman’s net every time he cast it. He threw the stone back into the sea many times, but when the same thing happened repeatedly, he got angry and threw the stone against another large rock, causing a stream of blood to flow from it. Seeing this, he worshipped the stone with devotion. This stone is the Kalbhairav of this place. Over time, shrines for Salbai, Bhunai, Zolai, and Gavrakha were established here. The Kalbhairav temple here is the village deity (Gram-daivat) of Velaneshwar. There is a tradition of seeking the oracle (Kaul) from Kalbhairav before starting any new work in the village or home. A festival is celebrated here on the day of Holi. On that day, a palanquin is taken out and carried to every house in the village for darshan.

The main festival of Velaneshwar is on Mahashivratri. A three-day fair is held during this time. Lakhs of devotees come for darshan during this period. On the first day, Abhisheka and Mahapuja are performed. A chariot procession is taken out in the premises. On the second day, Shiva Puja is performed, and on the third day, Shivayaga is conducted. The temple committee provides Mahaprasad to the devotees who come for this festival. According to records in the Sindhudurg District Gazetteer, the population of Velaneshwar village in 1872 was 1,500. When the Mahashivratri fair was held, sales worth approximately 12,000 rupees used to take place, which indicates that this festival has been grand since ancient times.

Apart from the temple, Velaneshwar is famous for the ancient stone walls in its sea! Researchers have found stone walls underwater in the deep sea of Velaneshwar. Searches conducted with the help of divers revealed walls that are 2 meters wide and 2 kilometers long. Research is ongoing to determine in which era and for what purpose these walls were built. It has become clear that there is an 8-kilometer-long wall in the sea near the Kharviwadi area close to Velaneshwar. Experts observe that these walls were built by humans using large, dressed stones.
