Located in a cave on a hill there is the vibrant abode of Lord Shiva known as Shivpeteshwar, which is a place of deep faith for many devotees. It is considered one of the most important scenic and beautiful locations in the Satara taluka. Situated opposite Sajjangad and above the Urmodi Dam, this place is particularly beloved by both tourists and devotees. It is said that worshipping Lord Shiva in the Shivpeteshwar cave helps reduce life’s stresses and provides a profound sense of peace of mind.
The legend of this place states that during the time of the Pandavas, King Muchukunda had fought many demons and sent them to the abode of Yama. Exhausted by constant warfare, the King’s mental health began to decline. Consequently, he began to worship Lord Surya (the Sun God). After some days, the Sun God was pleased and asked the King to seek a boon. The King asked the Sun God for a place to rest and find peace of mind. Furthermore, he requested a boon that anyone who disturbed his rest or sleep would be reduced to ashes the moment he looked at them. At that time, the Sun God directed Muchukunda to this location. Thereafter, King Muchukunda rested at this place.
During this period, a demon named Kalayavana had created havoc in heaven, on earth, and in the netherworld. No deity could withstand him. At that time, Lord Krishna went to fight him. In the battle that lasted for many days, even Lord Krishna could not overcome Kalayavana. Then, Lord Krishna lured him into this area while pretending to fight. Upon arriving here, Lord Krishna feigned fear and fled up the mountain. Seeing Lord Krishna afraid, Kalayavana became even more emboldened and chased after Him. At that moment, Lord Krishna hid in the cave on the mountain where King Muchukunda was resting; however, while doing so, Lord Krishna covered the King with His own shawl . Kalayavana entered the cave and, mistaking the sleeping King Muchukunda for Krishna, woke him up. Upon being awakened, King Muchukunda saw Kalayavana before him, and the very next moment, Kalayavana’s body was burnt (ignited) to ashes. Afterward, Lord Krishna explained the situation to the King. After resting sufficiently, the King installed a Shiva Linga at this spot. Since then, this place has been famous as Shivpeteshwar.
While traveling from Satara towards the Kas Plateau, one encounters the village of Petri. In this village, on the hill to the left of the road, lies the Shivpeteshwar cave. There is a footpath from the village to reach it. One can reach this place after walking for ۱۵ to ۲۰ minutes. While walking along the path, one can see the large water reservoir of the Urmodi Dam to the south and the beautiful view of the Kanher Dam to the north. Sajjangad, located beyond the Urmodi Dam, is also visible from here. The cool breeze blowing from the dam’s reservoir and the scenic surroundings make the climb easy. After following this path behind the mountain pinnacle, a large cave appears. The abode of Shivpeteshwar is inside this cave.
This cave is approximately ۳۰ feet wide, ۱۰ feet high, and ۲۲۵ feet deep. Inside the cave, on a hexagonal pedestal, there is a Nandi, and a short distance ahead is a Shiva Linga. There are also some crevices behind the Linga. These crevices contain water, and due to the darkness and low height, it is not possible to enter them. It is said that these crevices are likely connected to each other from the inside. Above the Shivpeteshwar cave is a plateau (tableland). During the monsoon and until December, hundreds of tourists visit this lush green plateau every day. To reach the plateau, one can take the path in front of the Shivpeteshwar cave, circling around the hill.
