Temple Itinerary & Overview

Adjacent to the famous Kaas Plateau, located to the west of Satara city, lies the temple of Goddess Ghatai Devi amidst the dense forest of Ghatwan. The sacred abode of faith for thousands of devotees, Goddess Ghatai Devi is believed to be ever-responsive to the calls of her devotees and bestows blessings by fulfilling their vows (navas). The annual fair (yatra) held here is one of the largest pilgrimage festivals in Satara district. A prime attraction of this festival is the honored Nandi (manacha Nandi) that arrives from Awarde village in Patan taluka, traversing seven mountains. Thousands of devotees gather here to seek the divine darshan of this sacred Nandi.

Goddess Ghatai Devi is the revered Kulswamini (family deity) of numerous families across Satara, Patan, Jaavali, and Wai talukas. The temple of the Goddess is situated in a dense forest canopy on the outskirts of Ghatwan village in Jaavali taluka. The temple premises are spacious and attained their present majestic appearance following a restoration carried out a few years ago. The temple architecture comprises a grand Sabhamandap (assembly hall) and a Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). In the Sabhamandap, two Nandis are seated side by side, while the Garbhagriha enshrines a Swayambhu (self-manifested) idol of the Goddess carved out of a single stone. Adjacent to this temple is the shrine of Goddess Waghjai and two sacred water tanks known as Gaimukh. A short distance from the main temple, higher up in the mountains, lies the original shrine (Mool Thane) of the Goddess. A walking trail leads there from the temple, which can be reached in about 20 to 25 minutes.

The Ghatai Devi Temple is renowned across the district for its grand annual festival. Every year on Pausha Krishna Chaturthi, a grand pilgrimage fair is held. On this sacred occasion, the deity’s idol is beautifully adorned with gold and silver ornaments. For the fair, the honored Nandi sets out from Awarde in Patan taluka to visit the Goddess, carrying a sacred Sasan-kathi (holy pole) and two huge nagaras (kettledrums) on its back. Traversing mountain pathways and crossing seven hills, this Sasan-kathi and Nandi arrive near the Ghatai Devi Temple by the evening of the fair day after a two-day trek. Nagaras are played continuously throughout the journey. Thousands of devotees assemble to seek darshan of this revered Nandi. Many devotees offer garlands made of currency notes around the horns of the Nandi in fulfillment of their vows.

Thereafter, from evening until ten at night, seven to eight Sasan-kathis and palanquins (palkhis) arrive here from surrounding villages including Nitral, Sawali, Rohot, Pateghar, Vadgaon, Kurul, Kasani, Aaptimura, Sangvimura, Kudeghar, and Atali. Amidst the thunderous beats of nagaras, cymbals, lezim, and other traditional instruments, each palanquin enters the temple premises accompanied by thousands of joyous devotees showering pink gulal. Subsequently, the honored Nandi followed by all the palanquins are taken inside the temple’s Sabhamandap. It is devoutly believed that during this time, the divine presence of the Goddess possesses the Nandi. Following the midnight Maha Aarti of the Goddess, the sacred Chhabina procession begins. Led by the Nandi, followed by the Sasan-kathis, and trailed by all the palanquins, the procession continues until four in the morning. On the following day, the pilgrimage celebrations conclude after the offering of Maha Naivedya, distribution of Maha Prasad, and the farewell procession. For the convenience of pilgrims, the MSRTC operates extra buses to Ghatwan from various talukas of Satara district. The District Council Health Department also provides medical first-aid facilities at the site.

Several villages in the Parali, Medha, and Tarale regions house the honored traditional custodians (Manakari) of the Goddess. In ancient times, the temple trust conferred copper inscriptions (Tamrapatra) as marks of honor upon these custodian villages. It is said that some of these villages still preserve these ancient copper plates today. The temple trust owns approximately 460 acres of land in the Ghatwan region, a portion of whose revenue is allocated for temple celebrations. Apart from this grand annual festival, the festival of Navratri is also celebrated here on a magnificent scale. Numerous devotees visit for darshan every Tuesday and Friday. Devotees can seek the divine darshan of the Goddess every day from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
