In every household here, one or two individuals are in the teaching profession. The ancient Yeleshwar Temple located in this village, with its intricate carvings and various artistic craftsmanship, makes this place a site of study for scholars of sculpture and a place of faith for devotees.
There are many temples in Ahilyanagar district that bear witness to the glory of history. Among them, the Yeleshwar Temple at Yeli is considered an important temple in terms of architecture. According to a legend, many years ago, several sages used to perform penance on the Yelu island in this region, which was then the Dandakaranya forest. Some of those sages installed a Shiva Linga here and named it Yeleshwar Mahadev. Later, the village was named Yeli after the name of this temple.
Scholars believe that this temple of Yeleshwar Mahadev must have been built in the 14th century. In the courtyard in front of the main temple entrance, there is a Nandi carved out of a single block of black stone. The craftsmanship on this newly made Nandi is distinctive. Since the ancient Nandi idol at this site was damaged, a new idol was consecrated here a few years ago. The ancient idol of Nandi can also be seen in the temple courtyard. Although this ancient temple was renovated a few years ago, the original form of the structure was preserved during the process.
This east-facing temple is designed with a Sabha Mandap (assembly hall), Antarala (vestibule), and Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). The specific style of construction of this temple, the sculptures on it, the carvings, and the idols on the walls and pillars suggest that this structure belongs to the Yadava period. The temple stands on a Jagati (plinth/foundation) that is approximately six to seven feet high. On the entrance of this entirely stone-built temple, gatekeepers are carved on both sides. At the bottom of the entrance is a Kirtimukha, and on the doorframe is a sculpture of Lord Ganesha.
The pillars in the Sabha Mandap have exquisite carvings, with load-bearing Yakshas playing musical instruments at the top, and Kirtimukhas and idols of various gods and goddesses carved at the bottom. On one of these pillars is an idol of Mahishasuramardini. A unique feature of this temple is the distinctive Antarala between the Sabha Mandap and the Garbhagriha. On the walls of this Antarala, one can see a treasure trove of sculptures from head to toe. On the wall towards the Garbhagriha, above the entrance to the sanctum, nine faces are carved. These nine faces represent the Navagraha (nine planets), which is said to be a specialty of this temple. Such carved nine faces are not seen in other ancient temples.
In the Vitthal-Rukmini temple located in the temple courtyard, there are idols of Lord Ganesha, Vitthal-Rukmini, along with Saint Vamanbaba and Saint Bhagwanbaba. A grand fair of Yeleshwar is held on the first Monday after Hanuman Jayanti. At this time, thousands of devotees come here for Darshan. Apart from this, the number of devotees coming here on Shravani Mondays and Mahashivratri is also large.
This sacred temple stands as a testament to deep spiritual devotion, ancient architectural grandeur, and rich local cultural traditions.
The sanctum sanctorum houses the divine idol consecrated according to ancient Vedic traditions, surrounded by serene courtyards and traditional temple architecture.
