Temple Itinerary & Overview

Nashik is recognized as one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in Maharashtra. According to local legends, it is said that all deities reside here. During their period of exile, Lord Shriram, along with Lakshman and Sita, resided in Nashik. The Puranas mention that to protect Dharma from the decadence of the Kali Yuga, Goddess Parvati sent Lord Ganesha to the Nashik region. Consequently, there are many shrines here dedicated to Ganesha, who is honored with the first worship (Agrapuja). The Navsha Ganapati, Modakeshwar, Mahotkat Ganesh, Tila Ganapati, and Lothecha Ganesh are considered ancient shrines.

There have been established shrines of Ganesha in Nashik since the thirteenth century. Among these, a place of deep faith for devotees is the awakened (Jagrut) Navsha Ganapati temple. The deity is named ‘Navsha’ because He is known to fulfill the vows (Navas) of His devotees. This temple stands on the banks of the Godavari River on Gangapur Road. The current structure was built during the Peshwa era, giving the temple a history of three hundred to three hundred and fifty years.

Chavandas was the maternal home of Shrimant Madhavrao Peshwa. His mother, Gopikabai, was a devout follower of Navsha Ganapati. On August 15, 1764, Raghoba Dada and Anandibai were blessed with a son, who was named Vinayak. After his birth, Chavandas was renamed ‘Anandvalli’ after Anandibai. Raghoba Dada also built a grand palace at Anandvalli. To the west of this palace stood the shrine of Navsha Ganapati. In the month of Phalguna in the year 1774, Raghoba Dada and his wife Anandibai established this temple so that the deity could be viewed directly from the palace. Even after the fall of the Peshwa rule, some temples in the area remained intact, including the Navsha Ganapati temple.

The temple becomes visible after descending the steps from the main Gangapur Road, passing through dense greenery towards the riverbank. This east-facing temple features a spacious assembly hall (Sabhamandap). The Ashtavinayakas have been installed on both sides of this hall. The pillars of the assembly hall are adorned with thousands of small and large brass bells. It is a tradition for devotees to tie colorful threads or offer brass bells upon the fulfillment of their vows. Beyond the assembly hall lies the sanctum sanctorum (Garbhagriha), which is topped by a dome-shaped spire. The four-armed, crown-wearing idol of Ganesha holds a noose and flowers in the upper two hands, while one lower hand holds a Modak and the other is in the Abhaya Mudra (gesture of fearlessness). There is silver ornamentation behind the idol.

Due to its location on the riverbank, the temple frequently faced the impact of floods. In 1988, the citizens of the Anandvalli area undertook the renovation of the temple. In 1990, the Ashtavinayakas were installed in the assembly hall by Saint Ganesh Baba. Every Tuesday, Sankashti Chaturthi, and Angarki Chaturthi, thousands of devotees visit for Darshan. On these days, the temple administration distributes approximately five thousand kilograms of Mahaprasad.

Near the entrance of the Navsha Ganapati temple is the Dargah of Hazrat Peer Sayyed Sanjesha Hussaini Shaheed. Although the Dargah and the temple are adjacent, there has never been any conflict here to this day. Both institutions have jointly established the ‘Ram-Rahim’ Mitra Mandal. This organization carries out various social welfare activities.

Due to the profound silence and the picturesque surroundings, the place is always bustling with both devotees and tourists. Devotees can have Darshan of this Ganesha from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
