Famous as the ‘Guru Gangeshwar Ved Mandir’, this temple enshrines the Vedas in physical form, and they are worshipped there. This temple celebrates the glory of the Vedas, which are the symbol of knowledge, and Guru Gangeshwar, who is the symbol of spiritual practice (Sadhana).
The couple Kisanlal Sarda and his wife Kiran Sarda of the Sarda Group held deep reverence for Indian culture and the Vedas. They considered Shri Gangeshwar as their Guru. In memory of Kisanlal Sarda’s father, Bastiram, and mother, Rampyaribai, and to express their devotion to Guru Gangeshwar and the Vedas, the Sarda couple decided to build this temple in 1985. Accordingly, through the ‘Matushri Rampyaribai Sarda Dharmik Pratishthan’, the Shri Guru Gangeshwar Ved Mandir was brought to life on Trimbakeshwar Road in Nashik city, opposite the District Collector’s residence. Artisans from Gujarat and Rajasthan worked tirelessly for three years to construct this temple. In 1988, the consecration (Pran-Pratishthapana) of all the idols was performed. Due to its attractive architecture and unique design, the temple gained fame in a very short time.
The Ved Mandir is 82 feet long, 65 feet wide, and 78 feet high. The entrance of the temple is semi-circular. The design of this artistically crafted entrance is quite unique. Above the entrance, there is a marble idol of the four-armed Lord Ganesha. The temple construction utilizes marble and black stone from Jaisalmer. Due to the large glass panels installed on the front of the main hall, the idols inside can be seen even from the outside. Behind the temple is a spacious meditation center. In this center, free study classes on ‘Indian Culture and the Importance of the Vedas’ are conducted for students from all over the country. These classes include an in-depth study of the Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda.
Upon entering the temple, one’s eyes are immediately drawn to the chandelier hanging from the ceiling. This chandelier is considered a masterpiece of artistry. It was crafted in Faridabad and is made from 20,000 hexagonal crystal glass prisms. There are 60 powerful bulbs installed in this chandelier, and when they are lit, the beauty of the temple is further enhanced.
Nashik city is sanctified by the presence of Lord Rama and the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga. Therefore, idols of Shri Rama, Lakshman, Sita, and Hanuman have been installed in the temple. These six-foot-tall idols were brought from Jaipur. The ornaments and garments for these idols were crafted in Mathura. In the center of the temple stands a magnificent marble idol of the Vedas (the scriptures). The Vedas, as symbols of knowledge, have been given the place of honor in this temple. Beside them is a 7-foot-tall bronze statue of Guru Gangeshwar. Blind from childhood, Guru Gangeshwar dedicated his entire life to the propagation of the Vedas. The individual volumes of the Vedas he edited and published weigh up to 22 kilograms each. Guru Gangeshwar had memorized all four Vedas.
To the right of the main Ved idol is a grand Shiva Linga. Nearby are the idols of Parvati and Nandi. This Shiva Linga weighs a massive 1700 kilograms and is carved from black stone. The black stone idol of Nandi also weighs 900 kilograms. On the left side of the temple, the Purusha Sukta is inscribed. This Sukta is mentioned in the Rigveda, and its meaning is also written there. On the right side is the Stri Sukta. The Purusha Sukta contains mantras for the worship of Vishnu, while the Stri Sukta contains mantras for the worship of Lakshmi. The verses in the Vedas are referred to as Suktas.
