Temple Itinerary & Overview

According to mythology, after tireless efforts, King Bhagiratha succeeded in bringing the celestial Ganga to Earth for the salvation of his ancestors. However, as the Earth could not withstand the force of the Ganga, Lord Mahadeva held her in his matted locks, from where she descended onto the Earth. For this reason, wherever the Ganga (or any river or water source) flows, ancient temples of Lord Mahadeva are found. One such ancient and famous Mahadeva temple is situated on the banks of the Godavari River at Limgaon in Beed district. As this is a living deity, devotees believe that Shukleshwar Mahadeva fulfills their prayers.

Limgaon, situated on the southern bank of the Godavari River in the Majalgaon taluka of Beed district, is an ancient and sacred religious site. Regarding the Shukleshwar Temple, which grants this village its spiritual significance, the legend states that once, a king committed a grave sin and decided to seek atonement. Guru Shuklacharya gave the king a black cloth and instructed him to walk towards the source of the river while chanting the name of Mahadeva. The Guru told him to dip the cloth in water at specific intervals, and that the king’s atonement would be complete only when the black cloth turned white. The king traveled in stages and reached this place; as soon as he dipped the black cloth into the riverbed of the Godavari here, it turned white. Thereafter, the king built a temple at this site. It is this very temple that became famous as Shukleshwar Mahadeva.

The temple is situated at a short distance from the village. The temple is enclosed by a sturdy fortification wall, which features a simple entrance gate. There are seats provided for devotees to sit in the spacious courtyard of the temple. The structure of the temple consists of a Darshan Mandap, Ardha Mandap, Sabha Mandap, Antarala, and Garbhagriha. In front of the Darshan Mandap, there is a black stone idol of Nandi placed on a Vajrapitha. To the left side of the Darshan Mandap, there is a Tulsi Vrindavan. This semi-open Mandap was constructed in 1994. The Darshan Mandap contains four rows of six square pillars each. Brass bells are hung from the ceiling. The beams are adorned with floral and leaf carvings, and the ceiling features circular patterns. In the center of the Darshan Mandap, there is a raised platform for the Samadhi.

Ahead, on a high plinth, stands an ancient temple featuring Hemadpanti-style stone masonry topped with brick construction. Since the Ardhamandapa is situated at a higher level than the Darshanmandapa, one must ascend approximately 10 steps to reach the high platform in front of the temple, from where separate stairs lead to the upper floor of the Darshanmandapa. The Ardhamandapa is a few inches higher than the platform. In the Ardhamandapa, there are square wooden pillars resting on stone bases. The entrance of the Sabhamandapa is situated slightly higher than the Ardhamandapa. The entrance has five door frames (Dvarashakhas). These door frames are adorned with intricate carvings of leaves and flowers. The pillar sections within the entrance are clearly defined. At the base of the entrance, there are sculptures of Dvarapalas (gatekeepers) and Dvarapalikas (female gatekeepers), while the Lalatabimba (lintel) features a sculpture of Lord Ganesha. The threshold (Mandarka) is decorated with a Chandrashila (moonstone) and a Kirtimukha.

There are doorways on the left and right sides of the assembly hall. There are a total of twelve ornate pillars in the assembly hall. Among them, eight pillars support a dome-shaped ceiling. In the center of the ceiling, there is a circular design. Four pillars are located in the four corners of the assembly hall. All the pillars stand on square bases. There are composite carvings on the square panels of the pillar shafts. On the brackets of the two pillars at the entrance on the left side of the assembly hall, there are sculptures of four-armed weight-bearing Yakshas. It appears as though these Yakshas are supporting the weight of the ceiling with two of their hands, while the other two hands are resting on their knees. Although the floor of the assembly hall is paved, it is clearly evident that the raised square section in the center is made of Rangshila stone. In the assembly hall, there are niches on both sides of the entrance and on both sides of the Antarala. In them, Ganpati, There are idols of deities including Lord Hanuman. In front of the main assembly hall, there is a narrow vestibule. On the octagonal ceiling of this vestibule, there is a circular design in the center.

The sanctum sanctorum is approximately one foot higher than the antarala (vestibule). The entrance of the sanctum sanctorum features three door frames: the parnashakha (leaf-adorned frame), the pushpashakha (flower-adorned frame), and the stambhashakha (pillar-adorned frame). At the base of these door frames are sculptures of the dwarapalas (gatekeepers), dwarpalikas (female gatekeepers), and the goddesses Ganga and Yamuna. On the lalata-bimba (lintel) is a sculpture of Lord Ganesha, while the uttaranga (architrave) features a torana (arch) of shikhara sculptures. In the center of the sanctum sanctorum floor sits the Shiva Linga. Against the back wall, placed on a vajrapitha (throne) within a makhar (shrine canopy), is the brass mask of Lord Mahadeva, which is used during festival periods.

There is a circumambulation path along the exterior of the sanctum sanctorum. The ancient construction of the sanctum sanctorum is of the Pancharatha style. It is said that the spire on the roof was built at a later period. At the rear of the sanctum sanctorum, there is a drainage outlet for sacred offerings. Beside it are an ancient Shiva Linga and an idol of Lord Ganesha. There is a safety railing on all four sides of the temple roof. The ceiling of the sanctum sanctorum features a four-tiered octagonal spire. Each of the bottom three tiers of the spire contains eight niches for deities. The fourth tier of the spire is adorned with a small stupa and a pinnacle.

Mahashivratri is the main annual festival celebrated here with great enthusiasm. The day begins with the Laghurudra Abhishek. Throughout the day, programs such as Bhajans, Kirtans, music, and Mahaprasad are organized at the temple. Thousands of devotees from the surrounding areas come to seek the blessings of the Lord and to fulfill their vows. On Chaitra Purnima, the Lord’s Palkhi procession is celebrated amidst the sounds of drums and cymbals, with the showering of Gulal. The mask of the Lord is placed in the palanquin and taken around the village. On the third Monday of Shravan, a large fair is held in the temple premises. During all festivals, the temple is crowded with devotees. The number of devotees visiting the temple on Mondays, Purnima, Amavasya, Ekadashi, and other such days is very large.
