Temple Itinerary & Overview

While many harbor a deep desire to seek the blessings of Kashi Vishweshwara, it is not always possible for everyone to travel there. However, that wish can be fulfilled by visiting the Kashiling Temple in Jeur, which is renowned as the ‘Dakshin Kashi’ (Kashi of the South). Among the many pilgrimage sites in the Akkalkot taluka of Solapur, this is considered a highly unique and sacred destination. It is said that in ancient times, water (Gangajal) emerged from the earth at this very spot. That same water remains around the Swayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva Linga to this day, never increasing or decreasing in level.

Kashiling is the presiding deity (Gramadaivat) of Jeur. The temple is said to be approximately four hundred years old. The legend associated with this temple tells of a sage who would regularly undertake a pilgrimage to Varanasi to seek the darshan of Kashi Vishweshwara and bathe in the holy Ganges. Once, while taking a holy dip in the Ganges, the bracelet he was wearing slipped off and was lost in the river. The sage searched for it in the water but could not find it. Disappointed, he came to the banks of the Ganges and began his penance. At that moment, he received a divine vision: he was told to travel south, where he would behold a miraculous Linga surrounded by a ring of water. In that water, he would find his lost bracelet, for the water surrounding the Linga is the Ganges itself.

Following the vision, the sage set out for the south after seeking the blessings of Kashi Vishweshwara. After some days, he reached the village of Jeur. While resting under a tree in the local Dhangarwada, he was awakened by a strange sound. There, he discovered sand, conch shells, seashells, and water as white as milk. He also saw a miraculous Shiva Linga. As he moved his hand through the water surrounding the Linga to drink it as Tirth (holy water), he found the very bracelet he had lost in the Ganges in Kashi. The sage shared the story of this Shiva Linga with everyone. Thereafter, this place gained fame as a pilgrimage site and earned the reputation of being ‘Dakshin Kashi’. Later, the same sage built the Kashiling Temple.

This vibrant shrine of Kashiling is located on the outskirts of Jeur village in Akkalkot taluka. Upon entering the temple courtyard through the main gate, one sees two tall platforms topped with Deepmalas (lamp towers). In the courtyard, there is a 60-foot-deep stone well with steps leading down to the water. It is said that there is also a Shiva Pindi inside this well. In the temple premises, there is an Ashwattha tree (Peepal tree). Additionally, in the center of the courtyard, in front of the temple, there are two stone Nandi statues on a platform.

The temple, built on a high plinth, consists of a Sabha Mandap (assembly hall), Antarala (vestibule), and Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). One ascends five steps from the courtyard to enter the Sabha Mandap, which features six pillars, two of which are embedded in the walls. From here, one enters the Antarala, which houses some ancient Pindis and idols. Beyond the Antarala lies the Garbhagriha, surrounded by a circumambulatory path. In the center of the circular Shiva Pindi in the sanctum is a hollow containing the Shiva Linga, which is always surrounded by water. It is said that this Swayambhu Linga is accompanied by conch shells, seashells, sand, and water. The water emits a distinct, pungent fragrance, and devotees drink it with the faith that it is indeed Gangajal. The water level around the Linga remains constant, regardless of the season.

A legend states that a potter once tried to measure the depth of the water around the Linga. Not only was he unable to fathom its depth, but he was also turned into a statue on the spot. Because of this, no one from the potter community resides in Jeur village. On the wall in front of the Pindi, there is a beautiful metal mask of Kashiling placed in a niche. It is said that there is a small, one-square-foot window above the main entrance of the temple through which the sun’s rays reach the Garbhagriha on the day of Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (Gudi Padwa). The temple features a Dravidian-style Shikhara topped with a golden Kalash. In 2006, the golden Kalash was consecrated by Jagadguru Chandrashekhar Shivacharya of the Kashi Peeth.

On the first Monday after the end of Shravan, a grand Palkhi (palanquin) procession of Kashiling is taken through the village. A fair is held here for five days, from Kartik Shuddha Pratipada (Diwali Padwa) to Kartik Shuddha Panchami (Pandav Panchami). During these five days, a small chariot (Uchai) is taken out in procession. On the night of Kartik Shuddha Panchami, the Rath Yatra (chariot festival) of Kashiling takes place, featuring a procession of the honored Nandi-dhwaja staffs. Various religious and cultural programs are organized during the Jeur festival. During the month of Shravan, the temple is crowded with devotees every Monday and on Amavasya. Programs such as Bhajans, Kirtans, and discourses, along with Palkhi ceremonies, are organized throughout Shravan.
