Temple Itinerary & Overview

Near Khaparkheda in Kamthi Taluka, the ancient Shri Sangameshwar Shiva Temple, dating back to the Bhosale era, is renowned. It stands at the confluence of the Kanhan, Kolar, and Pench rivers. This triple confluence is known as Bina Sangam, and thus the temple too is identified as Bina Sangam Mandir. Situated at the border of Kamthi, Parshivani, and Saoner talukas, this temple and its environs are celebrated not only as a pilgrimage site but also as a tourist destination. Consequently, the Government of Maharashtra has included this temple in the ‘C’ grade list of pilgrimage sites.

Though the construction of this Shiva temple on the banks of the Sangam is simple, it is a revered place of faith for thousands of devotees from the district. The Shiva temple complex spans approximately two and a quarter acres, housing the Shiva temple and the Mahamukteshwar Dham. There are also twenty-four Jain symbols in this area. The front part of the Shiva temple, that is, the Darshan Mandap, has four pillars connected by arched gateways. This Darshan Mandap is crowned with two shikhars. Here, on a raised platform, stands a beautiful idol of Nandi. The sanctum sanctorum houses an ancient Shivlinga. Annually, a fair is held here on Mahashivratri. The fair commenced in the year one thousand nine hundred and eighty-one. Many devotees of Lord Shiva from Nagpur district visit here at this time. Villagers offer Mahaprasad to the devotees who come for the fair. Being situated at the triple confluence, this temple holds immense religious significance.

On Rishi Panchami, the number of women devotees is particularly high. Devotees believe that taking a holy dip in the Sangam and having darshan of Mahadev on this day bestows great merit. Hari Path and discourses are held daily in this temple. During Adhik Maas, various programs are organized here for a month. As this Sangam is famous for asthi visarjan (immersion of ashes), hundreds of people visit daily for post-funeral rituals of their relatives.

Along with this Shiva temple, the naturally beautiful surroundings also hold importance as a tourist spot. Thousands of devotees and tourists visit here daily. There are hundreds of shops selling puja items in this area. It is recorded that on every Sunday, August fifteenth, January twenty-sixth, Dussehra, Diwali, and public holidays, over twenty-five thousand devotees visit here. The Zunka-Bhakar available here is famous, and there are many hotel-like shops in the area that serve it. Tourists and devotees who visit here invariably enjoy the delicious Zunka-Bhakar.

In the Mahamukteshwari Dham temple, adjacent to the Shiva temple, Goddess Kali is enshrined in ten forms, Durga Mata in nine forms, and Mahadev with His eight Shaktis. It is said that this is the only such place in the state. Devotees can have darshan at the Mahadev temple and Mahamukteshwari Dham temple from five o’clock in the morning to seven o’clock in the evening.

Besides the temples, the power generation plant and the surrounding coal mines at Bina Sangam further popularize its identity. The region extending from Kanhan northwest to Saoner covers an area of one hundred and thirty-eight square kilometers. In its center lies the Bina Sangam area, and to the west, in the Sillewada region, a large quantity of coal is available. According to the Indian Bureau of Mines, there are five coal seams within the eighty-five to one hundred and twenty-five meter thick rock formations here, with the coal ranging from first to third grade. The lower two seams contain good quality coal. It is stated that a total of eighty-three point six six million tons of coal is available in this region.
