Temple Itinerary & Overview

The ancient and famous temple of Nandikeshwar Mahadev is situated in the village of Nirwangi, located on the banks of the Nira River in Indapur Taluka. The uniqueness of this temple, nestled in dense forest, lies in the massive idol of Nandi found here. It is because of this Nandi that the place is famous among devotees as Nandikeshwar. This temple, a place of faith for thousands of devotees, is said to be about seven hundred years old. During the fair held here on the last Monday of the month of Shravan, thousands of devotees from various districts of the state come here for darshan.

Nandi, the vehicle of Mahadeva, is considered a symbol of devotion and strength. Regarded as the gatekeeper of Shiva’s court, this Nandi is one of the special attendants of Mahadeva. Mahadeva had granted a boon to Nandi that if a devotee whispered their wish into his ear while he was in deep meditation, it would reach Him. Accordingly, whenever Mahadeva was in deep meditation, Parvati would convey messages into Nandi’s ear. That is why, even today, many devotees whisper their wishes Instead of speaking directly before the Shiva Linga, devotees whisper their wishes into the ear of Nandi. It is the firm belief of devotees that Lord Mahadeva fulfills the wishes whispered into the ear of Nandi. For this reason, it is customary to worship Nandi upon entering a temple of Lord Mahadeva.

The legend of the Nandikeshwar Temple states that the original abode of Shambhu Mahadev was near the village of Nirwangi. Due to the lush greenery and orchards in this area, Nandi, the vehicle of Shambhu Mahadev, was very fond of this region. Often, Nandi would enter these orchards to graze. Fearing that their vegetables would be destroyed by Nandi’s presence, many people would drive him away. Unable to bear the constant disrespect shown to Nandi, Mahadev took him and went to Shikhar Shingnapur. However, because Nandi was so enamored with the Nirwangi region, he would repeatedly return to this area. Seeing Nandi’s love for this place, Mahadev arranged for him to stay in Nirwangi itself. This very place is the Nandikeshwar Temple.

According to another legend, invaders were carrying out destruction in this area. Once, their eyes fell upon the Nandikeshwar Temple. One of these invaders struck the first blow with his weapon upon this idol of Nandi. Due to this strike, a wound-like gash appeared on Nandi’s back, and blood began to flow from it. Seeing that blood emerging from the stone idol, the invaders were terrified and fled from there. As evidence for this story, a deep depression on the left side of Nandi’s back is shown. It is a tradition to have darshan of this Nandi before proceeding for the darshan of Mahadev at Shikhar Shinganapur.

Although the written history of this temple is not available, the obscure Based on the inscriptions and the architectural design of the temple, scholars claim that it dates back approximately eight hundred years. Evidence is available indicating that such temples have been constructed in the basins of the Bhima, Karha, and Nira rivers since the Chalukya era. It is said that this temple bears a resemblance to the Palasnath Temple at Palasdev. Similar to this temple, there are other temples of this architectural style in the areas of Purandar, Narayanpur, and Loni Bhapkar.

The Nandikeshwar Temple is situated at a short distance from Nirwangi village, amidst dense greenery. Located in the center of a spacious courtyard, the temple’s structure consists of an open mandapa, a Nandi mandapa, a sabha mandapa, an antarala, and a garbhagriha. In recent times, an open-style mandapa has been constructed in front of the original temple for the convenience of devotees. One enters the Nandi mandapa from this mandapa. In this Nandi mandapa, which features four stone pillars along with beams and a ceiling, there is a massive stone idol of Nandi in the center. The entrance to the sabha mandapa is on the side facing the Nandi mandapa. On the lalata-bimba of this entrance is an idol of Ganesha, and at the lower side There are armed gatekeepers. The door frames feature intricate carvings, and at the base, there are relief sculptures (murals) of welcoming figures, along with other men and women.

This entrance leads into the enclosed assembly hall (Gudhamandapa) of the temple. The assembly hall features four intricately carved stone pillars. In the center of these pillars lies a tortoise sculpture. To ensure proper ventilation in the assembly hall, a unique stone lattice design has been incorporated into the walls adjacent to the entrance. Within the squares of this lattice are stone flowers. In the niches carved into the walls of the assembly hall, there are idols of Lord Ganapati and Lord Mahadeva. The design of the sanctum sanctorum’s entrance is similar to that of the assembly hall’s entrance. It features sculptures identical to those found there. In the center of the sanctum sanctorum floor, there is a Swayambhu Shiva Linga. The assembly hall is topped by a small spire, while the sanctum sanctorum is crowned by the main, taller spire. The spire above the sanctum sanctorum has been newly constructed.

Festivals are celebrated here on Mahashivratri and every Monday of the Shravan month. The temple’s annual fair takes place on the last Monday of Shravan. This fair is counted among the major pilgrimages in the Indapur taluka. During this time, thousands of devotees arrive here for the darshan of the deity and to fulfill their vows.
