It is well-known that the Maharaj was named after the Shivai Devi of this fort. Due to the impregnable fort and the awakened divine presence, this place is always bustling with history enthusiasts, followers of Shivaji Maharaj, tourists, and devotees.
This historic and beautiful temple of Shivai Devi is located on Shivneri Fort, which is ninety-six kilometers away from Pune. There is a stairway path to reach this fort, which stands at an altitude of three thousand five hundred feet above sea level. While climbing this path, one encounters several entrance gates. Through one of these gates, one can reach the Shivai Devi temple. This path leads to the Shivai temple through large Gulmohar trees. When the Gulmohar is in full bloom, it feels as if a floral rangoli has been drawn along this path.
The temple of Shivai Devi is situated at one end of the fort. Behind it lies a high, carved rock face, while on two sides, there are deep valleys. From here, one can see a panoramic view of many villages in the Junnar taluka. This refreshing sight includes lush green vineyards, sugarcane fields, small and large rivers, and dams, which can be cherished in one’s memory. To the left of the temple, there is an open space that can accommodate five hundred to seven hundred people.
There are two doors to enter the temple. Its structure consists of a main hall (sabhamandap) and the sanctum sanctorum (gabhara). The carvings on the wooden pillars in the main hall are unique. Records indicate that this main hall was built in front of the original temple during the Peshwa era. The sanctum sanctorum seen today is the original ancient temple of Shivai Devi. In the sanctum, carved out of a single piece of stone, resides the self-manifested (swayambhu) four-armed idol of Shivai Devi.
According to historical records, before the birth of Shivaji Maharaj, Shahaji Raje had placed Rajmata Jijau Bai on Shivneri for her confinement as a safe haven. At that time, the Mughals were wreaking havoc in the region. Arson and looting had become a daily occurrence. The entire population was distressed. To find a way out of this situation, Jijau had made a vow to this Goddess. Shivaji was named after this Goddess.
During the Navratri festival, a nine-day celebration is held at the Shivai temple. During this time, programs like kirtans, discourses, and devotional vigils are held daily. This festival is celebrated by the villagers of Kusur, which is located at the foothills of Shivneri Fort. During this time, Mahaprasad is offered to the devotees who visit. Devotees can have the darshan of the Goddess in the temple daily from ten in the morning to six in the evening.
This sacred temple stands as a testament to deep spiritual devotion, ancient architectural grandeur, and rich local cultural traditions.
The sanctum sanctorum houses the divine idol consecrated according to ancient Vedic traditions, surrounded by serene courtyards and traditional temple architecture.
