One Satavahana king was named Lambodar. The Ganesha Gita, found in the Ganesha Purana, was composed in the thirteenth century at Rajur (the ancient Rajasadan Kshetra) near Jalna. All the Ashtavinayak shrines in Maharashtra are medieval. These sacred places are located in the districts of Pune, Nagar, and Raigad. For devotees in Marathwada who are unable to undertake a pilgrimage to these holy sites, an Ashtavinayak temple has been built in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
This Ashtavinayak temple is situated in the Pannalal Nagar colony and remarkably, it was established through a voting process. The story of the temple’s construction is told as follows: The colony was established in 1968. As it gradually grew, the residents began to feel the need for a temple in their area. These residents collectively formed a development organization. It was decided that the temple should be built through this organization. However, there was a difference of opinion regarding which deity’s temple should be erected. Therefore, it was decided to hold a democratic vote. At that time, the temple of Lord Ganesha received the most votes, and accordingly, this Ashtavinayak temple was built here. This temple has been constructed through public contributions. The land for it was donated by one of the members.
This Ashtavinayak temple is a two-story structure. Its facade resembles an old mansion. The temple faces west. The entrance is wide and tall. Above the door, there are three semi-circular windows. The facade of the upper floor also features windows similar to those of old Rajasthani mansions. Although this is a Ganesha temple, the image of Goddess Lakshmi is present on the lalatabimba (forehead panel) of the main entrance. The temple’s layout includes a sabhamandap (assembly hall) and a garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). The sabhamandap of the temple is large, and within it, leaving space for the pradakshina marg (circumambulation path), is the garbhagriha. This garbhagriha is slightly elevated and has a wooden entrance. Above the arch of this entrance, on the lalatabimba, there is an idol of Lord Ganesha. Inside the garbhagriha, a Ganesha idol is seated on a marble platform. This idol is five feet tall. It was crafted by skilled sculptors from Jaipur, Rajasthan. It has a crown on its head, large ears, weapons in two hands, and of the remaining two hands, one is in a posture of blessing and the other holds a modak (sweet). Behind this idol is a prabhaval (halo). Within the makhara (shrine) behind the main idol, the idols of the Ashtavinayakas are installed. These include Vigneshwara and Girijatmaj at the top, Mahaganapati, Siddhivinayak, and Mayureshwar on the right, and Vinayak, Ballaleshwar, and Chintamani, all adorned with sindoor, on the left. Below the platform where the main idol of Ganesha is seated, there is a small shrine containing a metal idol of Ganesha.
On Sankashti and Angaraki Chaturthi, thousands of devotees gather here for darshan. Ganesh Chaturthi, a festival celebrated throughout Maharashtra, is also observed with great enthusiasm and religious programs at this temple. During this time, the temple is specially decorated. Daily pujas, archanas, abhishekams, and recitations of the Atharvashirsha are performed regularly. On behalf of this temple, many festivals such as Ram Navami, Hanuman Jayanti, Krishna Janmashtami, and Datta Jayanti are celebrated. Katha-kirtans, pravachans (discourses), music festivals, and devotional song programs are also organized here. Many socially beneficial activities are also undertaken through the temple. Ganesha is the deity of intellect. Therefore, with the aim of providing educational assistance to poor students, the temple adopts their guardianship and provides them with financial aid. The temple also works in the fields of education, art, and sports. Every year, the Ashtavinayak Classical Music Festival is organized here. The temple also runs a library and a lecture series.
