Temple Itinerary & Overview

Sree Kumaramangalam Subrahmanya Swamy Temple is a well-known Subrahmanya temple located in Kumarakom Panchayat in Kottayam district, Kerala. The main deity of the temple is Bala Subrahmanya. Founded by Sree Narayana Guru, the temple holds an important place in Kerala’s social reform movement. It is also known for having a golden chariot dedicated to Lord Murugan, a rare feature among Murugan temples in Kerala.

Sree Narayana Guru arrived at Kumarakom by boat through Vembanad Lake from Alappuzha in 1903, where he was welcomed by the local people with a traditional boat procession. He established the temple as part of his social reform movement to oppose caste discrimination and untouchability and to provide freedom of worship for the socially disadvantaged communities. On the Pooyam star day in the Malayalam month of Kumbham, Malayalam Era 1080 (1905 AD), he consecrated the idol of Bala Subrahmanya at the temple. The temple continues to stand as a symbol of Guru’s message of social equality and reform. Every year, on the Chathayam star day, the temple organises the Sree Narayana Jayanthi Boat Race in memory of Guru’s first visit to Kumarakom and his birth anniversary.

The temple was built through the collective efforts of the local people of Kumarakom under the guidance of Sree Narayana Guru. The consecration became a strong statement against caste discrimination and untouchability. Following Guru’s message, “Be enlightened through education and be strengthened through organisation”, a weaving centre and a school were also established alongside the temple. The temple was developed as a centre of social reform, promoting education, self-reliance through skilled work and social progress along with religious worship.

The temple is built in the traditional Kerala style of architecture. A gopuram stands at the main entrance. The sloping tiled roofs and the spacious courtyard are among the main features of the temple. A temple pond is also located within the temple grounds. After entering through the main gate, visitors first come to the elephant shelter and an open mandapam. The wooden pillars and roof of the mandapam are decorated with carved wooden designs. Around the sanctum is a traditional nalambalam with an open central courtyard and surrounding corridors.

The main sanctum is square in shape. It was recently renovated using granite and copper sheets. The sanctum has a traditional Kerala-style sloping roof with a golden finial at the top. It is entered through a carved granite sopanam. The main deity is Bala Subrahmanya, consecrated by Sree Narayana Guru and facing east. The temple is also one of the few temples in Kerala where a golden chariot is dedicated to Lord Murugan. The other deities worshipped here are Ganapathi, Shiva, Sastha and the naga deities.

The main annual festival of the temple is celebrated on the Thaipooyam day in the month of Makaram. The eight-day festival includes Kavadiyattam and processions as the main rituals. The Sree Narayana Jayanthi Chathayam Boat Race is organised by the temple in Vembanad Lake every year on the Chathayam day in the month of Chingam to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sree Narayana Guru. During the Mandala season, from the first day of Vrischikam to the 11th day of Dhanu, special poojas and offerings are conducted for Sastha. Special poojas and abhishekam are also performed for Bala Subrahmanya on the Pooyam star day every month.

The main offerings at the temple include golden chariot pulling, Panchamritham nivedyam, Thrimadhuram nivedyam, milk abhishekam, bhasma abhishekam, Vel offering, Shadabhishekam and lemon garland offering. These offerings are mainly performed for the fulfilment of wishes, prosperity, success in education, family welfare, relief from illness, long life and success in endeavours. Ganapathi Homam, Appam nivedyam and Modakam nivedyam are offered to Lord Ganapathi for removing obstacles and achieving success. Ellu Vilakku is offered to Sastha for relief from difficulties, while Noorum Paal is offered to the naga deities for relief from Naga-related doshas and for the blessing of children. Devotees also offer Neypayasam and Palpayasam for prosperity and various Pushpanjali offerings for good health and the removal of obstacles in marriage.

The temple opens every day at 05:00 AM with Nirmalya Darshan. This is followed by abhishekam at 05:30 AM, Usha Pooja at 06:30 AM, Ethirettu Pooja at 07:30 AM and Ucha Pooja at 10:30 AM. The temple closes at 11:00 AM in the morning. In the evening, the temple reopens at 05:00 PM, followed by Deeparadhana at sunset and Athazha Pooja at 07:30 PM. The temple closes at 08:00 PM, marking the end of the day’s rituals. The pooja timings may change on special occasions such as Thaipooyam, the Mandala season and other important festival days.
