Temple Itinerary & Overview

Although Goa is a world-class tourist destination known for its deep blue sea, silvery sandy beaches, affordable spirits, and free-spirited lifestyle, its original identity is also that of one of the country’s most important religious tourism destinations. Many ancient temples here, such as Mangeshi, Shantadurga, Bhagavati, Dattatreya, Chandranath, Kamakshi, Madanant Temple, and the Mahaganapati Temple, are famous. The Sangram Ganesh Temple in the Ganeshpuri area of Mapusa is one of them and is a place of faith for thousands of devotees in Goa.

It is said that this temple is two hundred years old. While the temple itself may not be very ancient, the history associated with the idol is indeed ancient. The legend regarding the temple is that the original temple of this Ganesha was on Divar Island. In the year ۱۵۴۰, it was destroyed by fanatical Portuguese. Thereafter, the Ganesha devotees from there first moved the idol to Khandepar, then to Narve, and finally to Khandola. However, some devotees from there migrated to Mapusa. To be able to serve their beloved deity, they built this temple in the first half of the nineteenth century. Villagers here say that because this deity provides the strength to struggle in life, he is known as Sangram Ganesh. Later, as the population grew around the temple, this area came to be known as Ganeshpuri.

The temple is situated in a nature-rich area near the village. There is a paved road from the village to the temple. There is a parking area near the temple. One enters the temple courtyard through an entrance in the sturdy fortification surrounding the temple. In this spacious courtyard, there is a garden with a carpet of grass. There are many types of flowering plants in the garden. Paver blocks have been laid on the pathway leading from the courtyard to the temple. In the courtyard, in front of the entrance, there is an eight-tiered lamp tower (Deepmal) with an eight-pillared structure on an octagonal pedestal. Each tier of the lamp tower has eight arms, totaling ۶۴ arms. At the top of the lamp tower is a replica of a sacred pot (Mangal Kalash).

The temple structure consists of a front hall (Mukhamandap), a main hall (Sabhamandap), and a sanctum sanctorum (Garbhagriha). The front hall has elephant sculptures on both sides and three ornate pillars on the left and right sides each. The front hall has a vaulted roof. Since the front hall is higher than the courtyard, one enters it by climbing three steps. The entrance to the main hall has an ornate door frame with a decorative arch (Toran) above it. The arch features a Kirtimukh in the center and floral designs on both sides. The entrance has ornate wooden doors. The enclosed main hall has four rows of six pillars each. The outer pillars are embedded in the walls. All pillars stand on square bases. These pillars are connected to each other by semi-circular arches. Above the arches are beams and a vaulted roof. The ceiling of the main hall features circular carvings and a large chandelier hanging in the center. On the balconies (Sajja) facing the sanctum and the entrance in the main hall, there are sculptures of various deities. There are additional doors on the left and right sides of the main hall. In front of the entrance to the sanctum sanctorum, there is a mouse (Mushak) idol made of black stone on a pedestal (Vajrapitha).

Further ahead, there is a row of three sanctums. The entrance to the middle main sanctum is wooden, and the door frames are carved with floral designs. The entrance has ornate wooden doors. In this sanctum, on a pedestal, there is a large four-armed idol of Ganesha made of black stone. In the deity’s back two hands are an axe (Parshu) and a goad (Ankush), and in one of the front hands is a Modak. The fourth hand of Ganesha is in a blessing posture. The deity’s eyes, trunk, and ears are covered with silver plating, and there is a silver crown on the head. Behind Ganesha, on the pillars of the silver arch (Prabhaval), the image of Ganesha’s vehicle, the mouse, is carved below, and Riddhi-Siddhi sculptures are carved above. The arch features floral carvings. There are silver oil lamps (Samai) in front of the pedestal.

In the sanctum to the left of the main sanctum, there is a processional idol of Ganesha made of black stone on a pedestal. Here, devotees can perform worship of the deity themselves. In the sanctum on the right, there is a large Shiva Linga and a brass mask of Mahadeva on a brass pedestal against the wall behind it. In front of the entrance to this sanctum, there is a black stone idol of Nandi. Behind this sanctum, in a separate sanctum, there is an idol of Satyanarayan on a pedestal. Next to this sanctum is a silver canopy (Makhar), where an earthen Ganesha idol is installed during the ۲۱-day Ganeshotsav in the month of Bhadrapada. Above the roof of the main sanctum, there is a tall oval-shaped spire (Shikhara). At the top of this spire is an Amalaka and a Kalash. On the left and right sides, there are smaller spires of similar design on the roofs of the sanctums.

Ganesh Jayanti on Magh Shuddha Chaturthi and the ۲۱-day earthen Ganeshotsav starting from Bhadrapada Shuddha Chaturthi are the main annual festivals celebrated here with great enthusiasm. In the month of Bhadrapada, an earthen Ganesha idol is installed here. During both festivals, thousands of devotees come to the temple for the deity’s darshan and to fulfill their vows. Along with this, the temple’s anniversary is celebrated on Chaitra Shuddha Shashthi. On this day, there is an afternoon Aarti and Mahaprasad, and a palanquin procession at night. Apart from this, all festivals such as Gudi Padwa, Vat Purnima, Ghatasthapana, Dussehra, Kojagiri Purnima, Naraka Chaturdashi, Deepavali, Lakshmi Pujan, Tulsi Vivah, Mahashivratri, Holi, and Dhulivandan are celebrated here. The number of devotees visiting the temple for darshan on Sankashti Chaturthi and Tuesdays is large.

Devotees can have darshan of Ganesha in this temple daily from ۷ AM to ۱ PM and from ۴ PM to ۹ PM. On Tuesdays, Vinayaki, and Sankashti Chaturthi, the darshan time is from ۷ AM to ۹.۳۰ PM.
