Originally known as a Chaityagriha, the Ghorawadi Caves are now identified as the Shelarwadi Caves. Ancient inscriptions and several sculptures can be seen at this site. It is estimated that these Buddhist caves were carved a few years before the Common Era and during the first century of the Common Era. There is also a Shiva temple within these caves, which is known as the Ghorawadeshwar Temple. In a nearby Vihara, idols of Vitthal-Rukhumai and Sant Tukaram Maharaj can also be seen.
To reach this temple, located at an altitude of 450 to 500 meters above sea level, one must climb a steep flight of stairs. A Nandi statue is enshrined at the very base, and one must seek the blessings of Nandi before continuing the journey. There are three stages to reach the temple from the base. After climbing the stairs of the first stage, one must walk over rocks in the second stage, followed by another set of stairs. There is also an alternative path that can be used to reach this place. It takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes to reach the temple. The climb can be slightly exhausting due to the stairs, but the peace of mind experienced upon reaching the temple and observing the surroundings makes all the fatigue vanish. During the monsoon season, many tourists visit to witness the breathtaking view of numerous waterfalls cascading through the lush green mountain ranges and clouds brushing against them.
Upon entering the temple, one sees an idol of Nandi. Some inscriptions are found on the temple walls. The entire square hall feels as if it has been carved out of a single solid rock. In the front part of this hall lies the Shivalinga of Mahadeva. The interior of the temple feels cooler than the outside environment.
Outside the temple, there is a small Hanuman temple. Nearby, in a cave, are the idols of Vitthal-Rukhumai and Sant Tukaram Maharaj. This temple is also called ‘Sita Gumpha’. It is said that this was Sita’s ‘Nahani’ (bathing area), though it has now been filled in. It is believed that Lord Rama spent some time here during his exile. Pandava-era caves are also found in nearby Talegaon Dabhade, leading to the belief that the Pandavas may have visited this place. It is said that Sant Tukaram Maharaj used to come to this ancient temple for meditation. Indeed, this place feels perfectly suited for contemplation and reflection, which is why many sages and scholars have likely visited here over the ages. To ensure a water supply, water tanks have been carved into the rocks. Five to six such tanks in the area remain filled with water throughout the year.
The Ghorawadeshwar shrine is a place of deep faith for devotees in the surrounding region. A fair is held here every Shravani Monday and on Mahashivratri. The hill becomes vibrant with thousands of devotees arriving to seek the blessings of Mahadeva. The temple premises feature meditation halls, a Chaityagriha, and Viharas carved into the mountain. Their architecture is simple, with some intricate carvings visible in certain places. As one experiences the view and the profound silence of the area, the reason why so many seekers have come here becomes self-evident. Devotees can visit the temple for darshan between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
