Temple Itinerary & Overview

Swami Samarth, who taught that “no poison can kill positive thoughts and no medicine can save negative thoughts,” is considered the third incarnation of Shri Dattatreya. During his circumambulation of the Godavari river between the years 1800 and 1809, Swami stopped to rest under a banyan tree in Trimbakeshwar; today, a magnificent temple of Shri Swami Samarth and a Gurupitha stand at that very site.

It is said that Shri Datta took three incarnations for the welfare of humanity. In the form of Shripad Vallabh, He introduced the world to the true God to dispel the superstitions of the common people. In the Nrusimha Saraswati incarnation, He awakened righteousness, and in the Shri Swami Samarth incarnation, along with awakening righteousness, He emphasized the inner transformation of man. His reassuring words, “Do not fear, I am with you,” awakened self-confidence in the devotees.

Nestled at the foothills of the Sahyadri and Brahmagiri ranges, Trimbakeshwar is renowned across the entire nation as a significant religious pilgrimage site. This is the abode of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. These three forms are collectively revered as Shri Dattatreya. Furthermore, this sacred land is the source of the Godavari River, the site of Kushavarta Tirtha, the agricultural research land of Sage Gautama, and the Samadhi of Nivrittinath. Adding to the beauty of this holy ground, which also served as the place of penance for Pithale Maharaj, is the temple and Gurupitha of Shri Swami Samarth, situated on the slopes of the Brahmagiri mountain to the east of Trimbakeshwar village.

The construction of the Gurupeetha has been carried out in a scientific manner and in accordance with Vastu Shastra. This construction has been aligned from East to West. As per ancient architectural science, a Shri Yantra has been installed on the pinnacle of the Gurupeetha. It is believed that due to the Shri Yantra, there is an eternal presence of wealth, prosperity, knowledge, faith, devotion, and service. (According to religious scriptures, it is believed that the Shri Yantra is a manifestation of Goddess Lakshmi, and Mahalakshmi resides within it. In the place where the Shri Yantra is kept (as one goes there, the atmosphere becomes sacred and pure) The Dashamahavidya Yantra and Ashtabhairava Yantra have been installed in two directions. In the Shakta tradition, the group of ten principal forms in which the Goddess is worshipped is known as Dashamahavidya. This includes Mahakali, Ugratara, Shodashi, Bhuvaneshwari, Chhinnamasta, Bhairavi, Dhumavati, Bagalamukhi, Matangi, and Kamala, while the Ashtabhairavas are the eight manifestations of Kalabhairava. They are the guardians and controllers of the eight directions. This includes Asitanga Bhairava, Unmatta Bhairava, Bhishana Bhairava, Chanda Bhairava, Ruru Bhairava, Krodha Bhairava, Samhara Bhairava, and Kapala Bhairava. Many volunteers have also contributed their physical labor for the construction of the Gurupitha.

Shri Swami Samarth Gurupeeth is considered an excellent center for spirituality and human values. Separate departments have been established here to provide guidance on subjects such as Indian culture and Marathi identity, prenatal education and parenting, child development, agriculture, youth awakening, marriage rituals, Vastu Shastra, Vedic research, self-employment, and the environment. The Question and Answer department here has a distinct identity. This department works to understand the problems of distressed and suffering individuals and resolves them through spiritual guidance, free of charge. There is a grand dining hall (Prasadalaya), a charitable hospital, a library of rare books, well-equipped pilgrim accommodation (Bhaktaniwas), and a spacious parking area. Thus, a beautiful confluence of religion and science can be witnessed here.

Before entering the Gurupeetha, devotees are permitted entry only after washing their feet and performing circumambulation of the Audumbar tree. One can enter the main court of Swami Samarth through the spacious east-facing grand entrance of this Gurupeetha. The principal seat of Swami Samarth is located in the center of the court. Here, in a silver shrine, resides the idol of Swami seated upon a peacock throne. Additionally, the court houses idols of Kalbhairava carved in black stone, as well as deities including Shri Hanuman, Renuka Mata, Mahalakshmi, Tulja Bhavani, and Saptashrungi Mata. Within the temple premises, there is the Vatavruksha Mandir, situated at the spot where Swami halted while performing the Godavari Parikrama. Along with this, there is the memorial site of Pithale Maharaj, the memorial site of More Dada, and the Yagnabhumi.

On Chaitra Vadya Trayodashi, the Punyatithi of Swami Samarth and Dattatreya Jayanti are observed here with continuous chanting of the Divine Name and the recitation of the Guru Charitra. Additionally, on the fourth Saturday of every month, guidance is provided to devotees, representatives of service centers, and pilgrims arriving from across the country and abroad. Every day, in the afternoon and evening, Mahaprasad is offered to devotees at a nominal cost. Furthermore, accommodation facilities are available for devotees at the Bhakta Niwas. Devotees may have Darshan of Swami Samarth in the temple from 6 in the morning until 8 in the evening.
