Temple Itinerary & Overview

The pilgrimage site of Neera Narsinhpur is situated at the confluence of the Neera and Bhima rivers in the Indapur taluka of Pune district. This temple, dedicated to Lord Narasimha, the fourth avatar of Lord Vishnu, is a place of faith for millions of devotees. According to mythological references, the idol here was established by the devotee Prahlada, crafted from sand. The sturdy fortifications and bastions surrounding the structure give it the appearance of a fortress. During the Peshwa era, Sardar Vitthal Shivdev Vinchurkar renovated this temple and gave it its present form. The main feature of this site is the west-facing sand idol of Shri Narasimha enshrined in the sanctum sanctorum.

With a long history spanning one thousand four hundred years, Neera Narsinhpur is known as ‘Dakshin Kashi’. According to legend, the devotee Prahlada established the idol of his beloved deity here. Geographically, the shape of this region resembles a lion’s claw. This land, surrounded by water on three sides, holds special religious significance. The Pune District Gazetteer of १८८५ contains detailed information about the architecture of this temple. The land, blessed with the legacy of Prahlada’s devotion, is also described in various Puranas. Following the teachings of Narada Muni, Prahlada crafted the sand idol while performing penance in this very area. Pleased by Prahlada’s unwavering devotion, Vishnu appeared before him in the form of Narasimha. The Ramayana mentions that Lord Shri Ramachandra also visited this pilgrimage site during the Treta Yuga. After slaying Ravana, at the behest of Sage Agastya, Rama began his journey from this very place to seek liberation from the sin of Brahmahatya. This land has been further enriched by the presence of Maharishi Vyasa and Samarth Ramdas Swami. The spiritual importance of this area has been repeatedly highlighted through the Abhangas of many saints.

During the medieval period, this temple received the patronage of the Vijayanagara emperors and later the Maratha rulers. It was during the Peshwa era that the temple underwent a true renovation, acquiring its current form. The loyal Peshwa Sardar, Vitthal Shivdev Dani Vinchurkar, undertook the reconstruction of this temple in the year १७५६. The foundation of the temple had weakened due to the river’s flow. Consequently, it took seven years just to strengthen the foundation. The construction, which lasted for twenty years, cost approximately four and a half lakh rupees at that time. This work was completed in the year १७८७. Inscriptions related to this can still be seen in the temple premises today.

The architecture of the temple is considered a beautiful example of the Maratha style. Built in black stone, this structure, which resembles a fortress, is extremely sturdy. The temple is surrounded by high fortifications and bastions. The main entrance on the west side is called the ‘Mokshadwar’. One must climb thirty-three stone steps to reach this entrance. There are stone-carved elephants on both sides of the entrance. A massive Portuguese-style bell is hung near the western door. Chimaji Appa brought this bell here as war booty after conquering the Vasai Fort. The sound of this bell can be clearly heard throughout the entire area.

Entering through the gate, one reaches a vast courtyard. The brass door of the assembly hall (Sabhamandap), which is entirely made of stone, features distinctive carvings. Sculptures of gatekeepers are carved on both sides of this entrance. There are sixteen large pillars in the assembly hall. Each pillar in this ‘Solakhambi’ (sixteen-pillared) hall is carved with mythological stories and images of deities. The wooden ceiling of the assembly hall has exquisite carvings. One of the pillars depicts the scene of Narasimha slaying Hiranyakashipu in minute detail. Beyond this, one enters the sanctum sanctorum. The sanctum houses a large throne of Lord Narasimha. The west-facing idol of Lord Narasimha here is known as ‘Kevala Narasimha’. This sand idol, made by the devotee Prahlada with his own hands, is seated in a Virasana posture, and its expression appears extremely fierce. To protect this sand idol, it is anointed with ash every year. Next to the main idol is another idol made of black stone called ‘Shamraj’. It is believed that this idol was established by Lord Brahma himself.

The temple has an octagonal shikhara (spire) about ७० feet high. This shikhara is divided into various tiers, adorned with deities, animals, and intricate carvings. There is a golden kalash at the top of the shikhara. To the left of the temple is a separate temple of Mahalakshmi. This temple houses a beautiful idol of Mahalakshmi carved from Gandaki stone. Water seeps day and night through two stones of this temple’s shikhara. This small seepage is known as the Guptaganga. In addition to this, there are shrines of Raghavendra Swami, a Dattatreya temple, and Vimaleshwar Mahadev in the vicinity. Within the large fortifications of the temple, cells have been built for the accommodation of pilgrims.

Apart from this temple, the region of Neera Narsinhpur is famous for the various Tirthas (sacred water bodies) located here. These Tirthas at the confluence of the Bhima and Neera rivers are considered extremely holy. Bathing at the Lakshmi Tirtha here on Fridays holds special significance. The Pishachamochan Tirtha on the banks of the Bhima river is known for rituals like Narayan Nagbali and Shraddha. Like Nashik and Kashi, there is a tradition of performing rituals for the peace of ancestors here. Many mythological stories are also associated with places like Koti Tirtha and Bhanu Tirtha. Devotees believe that bathing at this confluence of rivers brings spiritual merit.

At the Narasimha Temple, the Kakad Aarti is performed daily at five o’clock in the morning. At seven o’clock in the morning, the deity is bathed with Abhishek and morning worship is conducted. At twelve o’clock in the afternoon, following the midday worship, the offering of Puran Poli is presented to the deity. The day’s rituals conclude with the Shej Aarti at nine o’clock at night. It has been a long-standing tradition here to recite the ‘Dashavatara Stotra’ composed by Shri Madhvacharya during the midday Aarti. Narasimha Jayanti, celebrated on Vaishakh Shuddha Chaturdashi, is the grandest festival at this temple. A ten-day festival is observed on the occasion of Jayanti, during which various religious and cultural programs are organized. During this time, a procession of the deity’s holy sandals is taken out in a palanquin. Apart from this, festivals like Gudi Padwa, Vijayadashami, and Ratha Saptami are also celebrated here with great enthusiasm. Devotees can have Darshan here daily from five o’clock in the morning until eight-thirty at night.
