Temple Itinerary & Overview

Praying to God for help is a path of devotion in the Hindu tradition. In times of crisis, when human efforts fall short, there is no salvation without the Almighty’s blessings. At such times, devotees make vows (navas) such as performing Mahapuja, offering sacrifices, donating to temples, or constructing a shrine. Temples built in fulfillment of vows number in the thousands. The Damodar Temple, established in the house of a local moneylender on Swatantra Path in Goa, is one such shrine. Devotees firmly believe that the residing deity, Lord Damodar, is ‘Jaagrut’ (living and responsive) and fulfills all vows. The popular Damodar Bhajani Saptah festival, celebrated here during the month of Shravan, along with the accompanying seven-day fair, is renowned far and wide.

This temple was established inside a house in 1899. It is said that at that time, a severe cholera epidemic had spread across the town of Vasco. Countless people were dying helplessly; a tragic dance of death prevailed. The people believed that only Lord Mahadev could bring an end to this calamity. Therefore, seeking the blessings of Lord Mahadev, a sacred coconut was brought from the Shri Ramnath Damodar Temple in Zambaulim, located 22 km from Margao, and placed in the residence of a moneylender in Vasco. It was then decided to establish the Damodar Mahadev Temple here. The local villagers were convinced that the epidemic in the town subsided purely through the grace of Lord Mahadev. The tradition of celebrating the seven-day Vasco Bhajani Saptah festival, which began back then, continues uninterrupted to this day. The present-day Damodar Temple stands within that very house, where a portion of the residence was converted into the temple structure.

The temple is situated along the road, close to the Vasco seashore. The structure of the temple consists of an Ardhamandapa (entrance porch), a Sabhamandapa (assembly hall), and a Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). The Ardhamandapa is raised about two feet above the road level, with four steps at the entrance. The Sabhamandapa is slightly higher than the Ardhamandapa, with two steps at its entrance. To allow light and air into the enclosed Sabhamandapa, windows with iron grills and glass panes are provided on both sides of the entrance and on the left wall. Inside the Sabhamandapa, there are two additional doors on the right side. The ceiling of the Sabhamandapa is adorned with golden-colored decorative carvings. In front of the entrance to the sanctum sanctorum in the hall, a marble idol of Nandi is seated on a Vajrapeetha (pedestal). Further ahead, Padmapaduka (sacred sandals) are placed on a wooden table. Devotees offer their prayers and take darshan of Lord Damodar Mahadev from this point. Beyond this lies the silver entrance door to the Garbhagriha, featuring intricate ornamental carvings on the doorframe. The lintel above the entrance features a sculpted depiction of Lord Vishnu reclining on Sheshnag (Sheshashayi Vishnu) with Goddess Lakshmi massaging His feet, flanked by sculptures of Garuda and Lord Hanuman. At the base on both sides of the doorway are sculptures of Nandi, while the door panels depict Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati. Inside the sanctum, seated upon a throne over a Vajrapeetha, is the two-armed (Dvibuja) idol of Lord Damodar carved in black stone. The idol is adorned with a silver crown, a golden Prabhavali (aureole) behind displaying conch and discus motifs, and a Kirtimukha at the top. Placed before the deity is the sacred coconut (Shreephal) used in daily worship, which is replaced every year. The temple features a flat roof without a Shikhara (spire).

A seven-day grand celebration called Bhajani Saptah is observed at the temple from Shravana Shukla Shashthi to Dwadashi. This fair, popularly known as ‘Vasco Saptah’, is famous throughout Goa. Thousands of devotees visit the temple during this festival. On the first day, Mahaprasad is distributed to visiting devotees. Continuous bhajan recitations take place on all days of the Saptah, featuring renowned bhajan singers from Goa and Maharashtra. On the final day, the sacred coconut from the worship is taken out in a palanquin procession and immersed in the sea, after which a new sacred coconut is consecrated for daily worship. Stalls selling a variety of items are set up here during these seven days.

Festivals like Mahashivratri, Chaitra Padwa, Dasara, Diwali, Kojagari Purnima, and Kartik Purnima are devoutly celebrated at the temple. During all major celebrations, thousands of devotees from across the state arrive to seek the deity’s divine grace and fulfill their vows. On these occasions, events such as bhajans, kirtans, discourses, devotional music, and Mahaprasad distribution are organized at the temple. A large number of devotees gather for darshan on auspicious days such as Mondays, Thursdays, Purnima (full moon), and Amavasya (new moon).
