Temple Itinerary & Overview

Shaivism is the largest sect in the country, and many Shaivite temples are famous in Goa. Notable among these are the Keshav Narayan Temple in Ponda, the Saptakoteshwar Temple restored by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the 16th century, the 12th-century Shiva temple at Tambdi Surla, and the Mangeshi Temple, the family deity of the Mangeshkar clan. Additionally, there are many temples dedicated to Bhairav, Kalbhairav, and Vetal in Goa. One such ancient and renowned temple is the Gomanteshwar Mahadev Temple located in the Brahmapuri area of Old Goa. This sacred site has been known by various names over time, including Gomant Dev, Goveshwar, and now, Gomanteshwar. Devotees hold a deep faith that the awakened Mahadev here grants their prayers.

It is said that in the 14th century, the emperors of the Vijayanagara Empire established an educational institution at Brahmapuri, known as an ‘Agrahar’. The Gomanteshwar Mahadev temple was built at this very site, along with water tanks or ‘Tirthas’ constructed nearby. It is believed that in the 16th century, Madhav Mantri, an official of the Vijayanagara Empire, renovated this ancient temple and created another pond, which is known as Madhavtirtha. During the Portuguese rule in the 17th century, this educational institution was closed, and the temple was demolished. At that time, the surrounding sacred tanks were also filled in. In 1752, the Portuguese opened the sacred tank, but it was later filled in again. Subsequently, the local people courageously rebuilt the temple in 1775, but the Portuguese demolished it once more in 1779. Later, in 1932, the sacred tank was rediscovered during excavations. Finally, in 1947, the temple of Lord Gomanteshwar was restored at the same site. It is said that this ancient and famous temple is mentioned in many religious scriptures and historical documents.

The first welcome arch of the temple stands on the road leading from the village to the temple. The idol of Gomanteshwar is housed in a ‘Meghadambar’ (canopy) on the archway. The temple is situated on a high hill a short distance from this arch. In the temple courtyard, there is a square pond called Brahmapuri Tirtha, which is fed by a natural water source. The pond features steps on all four sides and a fountain in the center. It is customary to purify oneself here before proceeding to the temple for Darshan. The temple architecture consists of a Rangamandapa (assembly hall), Ardhamandapa (vestibule), Sabhamandapa (main hall), Antarala (antechamber), and Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). In the Rangamandapa, there are stone benches along the walls on the left and right sides for devotees to sit, excluding the entrance area. The ceiling of this hall features intricate circular carvings.

Further ahead is the entrance to the Ardhamandapa. In the Ardhamandapa, there are sculptures of Dvarapalas (gatekeepers) on platforms along the walls on both sides of the entrance to the Sabhamandapa. The wooden entrance of the Sabhamandapa is adorned with floral and leaf carvings on the door frames and the arch above. The enclosed Sabhamandapa features ornate pillars connected by semi-circular arches, supporting a domed ceiling. Brass bells and a decorative glass chandelier hang from the ceiling. There are two additional doors in the Sabhamandapa leading to the left and right sides of the Garbhagriha. In front of the Garbhagriha entrance, there is a black stone idol of Nandi placed on a Vajrapitha.

The Antarala features a wooden railing with small pillars, flanked by Dvarapala sculptures on both sides. Ahead, the entrance to the Garbhagriha is adorned with a silver peacock arch (Mayur Toran). The arch features a Kirtimukha at the top and the Omkar symbol in the center. Inside the Garbhagriha, the Shiva Linga is placed on a Vajrapitha. Against the back wall, there is a silver idol of Gomanteshwar Mahadev on a pedestal, framed by an ornate silver halo. There is a circumambulation path (Pradakshina Marg) around the exterior of the Garbhagriha. The roof of the Ardhamandapa features a small Shikhara (spire) topped with an Amalaka and Kalash. The roof of the Sabhamandapa has a domed Shikhara, also topped with an Amalaka and Kalash, similar to the Ardhamandapa. There is a Nandi sculpture on the front side of the roof. The roof of the Garbhagriha features a four-tiered circular Shikhara. The niches in the second tier of the Shikhara contain idols of various deities, while the niches in the third tier contain Shiva Lingas.

In the temple courtyard, there are smaller shrines dedicated to other deities and the Gomanteshwar Hall, where cultural programs and wedding ceremonies are held. The premises also include residential quarters for temple staff and the Madhavtirtha tank. Beside the tank, there is a small shrine housing a stone idol of a local deity.

Mahashivratri is the main annual festival celebrated here with great enthusiasm. Thousands of devotees from the surrounding areas visit the temple during this time for Darshan and to fulfill their vows. There is also a large crowd for the Darshan of Gomanteshwar Mahadev every Monday during the holy month of Shravan. Additionally, festivals such as Chaitra Padwa, Dussehra, Diwali, Kartik Purnima, Kojagiri Purnima, Nag Panchami, and Vaikuntha Chaturdashi are celebrated throughout the year. The temple remains crowded with devotees on Mondays, Pradosh, Ekadashi, Purnima, and Amavasya.
