Temple Itinerary & Overview

“Do not ask a saint about his caste, ask instead for his wisdom. Value the sword for its sharpness, and leave the scabbard aside.” This means that spirituality is not the exclusive right of any one caste. God’s grace showers equally upon all of humanity. Therefore, Kabir Das suggests that a wise person should not be confined by the boundaries of caste. The work of the great saint Rajaram Bhaguji Jadhav, alias Kaikadi Maharaj, who served humanity selflessly, was dedicated to the upliftment of mankind. The Kaikadi Maharaj Math in Pandharpur is famous for its diverse sculptures. Devotees believe that seeking the blessings of Kaikadi Maharaj’s Samadhi at this Math brings profound, transcendental peace.

Kaikadi Maharaj was born in 1907 in the village of Mandavgan, in the Shrigonda taluka of Ahmednagar district. He was blessed with a life of 71 years. He attained Mahasamadhi in this very Math in Pandharpur on October 21, 1978. Having dedicated his life to the service of humanity, Kaikadi Maharaj renounced a comfortable worldly life in his youth to seek the Divine. He traveled across India in search of true happiness, learning many Indian languages during his journey. He performed penance for 36 years, including 12 years of standing meditation. He spent five years in a snowy cave in the Himalayas and two years in seclusion. During this period, he experienced a vision of the Divine in the form of a small child. Thereafter, he upheld the motto that “Service to humanity is service to God” until his final breath. He adopted the rule of consuming only enough food to survive and wearing only enough clothing to maintain modesty. Throughout his life, he preached and propagated the thought that humanity is the only true religion. When his disciples asked what they should offer as Guru Dakshina, Maharaj asked them to provide notebooks filled with the written chanting of the Divine Name (Namjap). His devotees wrote the names of their respective deities and offered these notebooks to him. Maharaj instructed his younger brother, Tukaram Kaka, to build a temple once one billion chants had been collected. Through the efforts of Tukaram Kaka, this unique Math was established in Pandharpur.
This Math in Juni Peth is enclosed by a sturdy fortification. One enters the temple courtyard through a two-story gateway within the walls. On both sides of the entrance, there are two square pillars with niches containing idols of deities. The door frames are adorned with floral carvings, and an image of Lord Ganesha is carved on the lintel. There are guard rooms on both sides of the entrance and a Nagarkhana (drum house) on the upper floor. The Math building is four stories high. Inside, on the right side, there are various statues, and a circumambulation path (Pradakshina Marg) runs alongside them. Once one enters this path, it is not possible to exit midway. There are many seats along the path for devotees to rest. The doors here are designed in the shapes of various animals and birds, making them quite attractive. The path features several halls and doors. The route is uniquely designed—at times it passes through a train, at other times through the belly of a cow or the chest of a Garuda—offering many such attractions along the way.

The first hall of the Math is dedicated to the Divine Mother. It houses sculptures of many saints, historical figures, and their mothers. The second hall contains sculptures of various sages and seers. Further on, there are sculptures of the Navnath, Tirthankaras, Gautama Buddha, and the Dashavatara (ten incarnations of Vishnu). Additionally, the Math houses sculptures of many kings and emperors from the Puranas, as well as saints and scenes from their lives. There are over a thousand sculptures here, with information provided near each one. After viewing the sculptures on all four floors, one returns to the Math courtyard, where the Samadhi temple of Kaikadi Maharaj is located. In the welcome arch in front of the Samadhi temple, there are two platforms on either side featuring sculptures of a lion and a tiger embracing each other. Since the Samadhi temple is on a higher platform than the courtyard, there are five steps to ascend. There are railings on both sides of the steps and around the platform, except for the entrance. These railings are adorned with sculptures of various deities.

At the entrance of the Samadhi temple, there are two ornate circular pillars on both sides, supporting an arched gateway. Inside the temple, on a Vajrapitha (diamond throne), sits the meditative idol of Kaikadi Maharaj in a Yogic posture. The ceiling of the temple is decorated with sculptures of various deities, animals, and birds. The Math complex includes several other structures, such as a Bhakta Niwas (pilgrim lodging), a kitchen, and an Annachhatra (free food distribution center). All these buildings and their roofs are adorned with sculptures of various deities and saints.

Like all other temples and maths in Pandharpur, devotees from across the state visit for Samadhi Darshan during Ashadhi and Kartiki Ekadashi. During these times, the Math arranges for their accommodation and food. The death anniversary of Kaikadi Maharaj is celebrated every year on October 21. Additionally, daily bhajans, kirtans, discourses, and Mahaprasad are organized at the Math. Devotees can visit the Math for Darshan daily from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
