The Goddess is renowned for being one who rushes to the aid of those who call upon her and fulfills the vows of her devotees. She is among the most beloved deities for the *Maherwashinis* (women of the village who have married and moved away). Consequently, during the annual festival on the 11th and 12th of May, thousands of these women return to offer *Oti* (a ritual offering of a sari and coconut) to the Goddess. Along with them, thousands of devotees from across Konkan attend this festival. It is often said in the folk songs of the Goddess that “the entire Konkan descends upon Kasarde.”
In the nature-rich taluka of Kankavli, situated about two kilometers from the Mumbai-Goa highway, the beautiful and famous temple of Mhadka Devi stands amidst the dense greenery of Kasarde village. The temple, elevated from the ground, is surrounded by a fortification wall. After climbing 15 to 20 steps, one enters the spacious courtyard of the temple through the main gate. The temple of Mhadka Devi is located in the center of this paved courtyard. In front of the temple entrance, there is a *Deepstambha* (lamp pillar) on a high pedestal. A unique feature of this pillar is that it is topped with an *Amalaka* and a *Kalash*, which are typically found on the main spire of a temple. Beside the *Deepstambha* on the same pedestal stands a *Tulsi Vrindavan*. The temple structure consists of a *Darshan Mandap*, a *Sabha Mandap*, and a *Garbhagriha* (sanctum sanctorum). The *Darshan Mandap*, supported by four pillars, is open and topped with a small spire, *Amalaka*, and *Kalash*.
At the entrance of the *Sabha Mandap*, there are *Dwarpals* (gatekeepers) on both sides. The *Sabha Mandap* is semi-open and features *Kakshasana* (stone benches) for devotees to sit. The pillars above these benches are connected by arch-like structures. Following the Konkani architectural style, the central rectangular portion of the *Sabha Mandap* is set a few inches lower than the surrounding floor. Beyond the *Sabha Mandap* and a circumambulation path lies the *Garbhagriha*. In the niches on the front wall of the *Garbhagriha* are idols of Ganpati and Saraswati. In the center of the *Garbhagriha* is a Shiva Linga made of black stone. Behind the Shiva Linga, on a low pedestal, is the eight-armed idol of Mhadka Devi riding a tiger. Adorned with a golden crown, vermilion on her forehead, a nose ring, earrings, various weapons in her hands, and dressed in a green sari with jewelry, the idol of the Goddess looks exquisite. The *Sabha Mandap* has a small spire, while the *Garbhagriha* is crowned by the main temple spire.
Every year, a grand fair is held here on the 11th and 12th of May. Sometimes, this festival lasts for three days. During this time, the entire village, along with the temple premises, is decorated. Banners are placed everywhere, and the area is illuminated with electric lights. Rangolis are drawn in front of every house and on the village roads. All the *Maherwashinis* and those working away from home make it a point to attend this festival. It is considered one of the major fairs in Kankavli Taluka and carries a long-standing tradition. As Mhadka Devi is a *Jagrut* (awakened/powerful) deity, there is a large crowd of devotees during the festival to make vows or fulfill those that have been granted. On the 11th of May, a grand *Satyanarayan Mahapuja* is performed in the temple. On both days, various programs such as *Bhajan*, *Dabalbari* (a traditional competitive singing style), and *Kirtan* are held. A spectacular display of fireworks is also a highlight of the festival.
During the two days of the fair, the temple committee and villagers provide free meals in the afternoon and evening to every devotee who visits. For this, more than 500 kilograms of rice, 250 kilograms of vegetables, 250 kilograms of lentils, and *Jalebis* are prepared. Apart from this festival, *Navratri* is also celebrated here on a large scale. Since there is a Shiva Linga in the temple, many devotees also visit for *Darshan* on *Mahashivratri* and during the Mondays of the holy month of *Shravan*.
