Temple Itinerary & Overview

Nestled in the lap of the picturesque Ajanta mountain ranges, the Rudreshwar Cave Temple, located in the caves near Vetalwadi village in Soygaon taluka, is a place of faith for thousands of devotees. These caves, which are approximately ३००० years old, are also famous as the Rudreshwar Ganesh Caves. Inside the cave, a Ganesha idol is carved near a Shivalinga sculpted into the rock. The waterfall near these caves is a major attraction for visiting devotees and tourists alike. It is the belief of the devotees that by bathing under this flowing waterfall and having the darshan of the Shivalinga and Lord Ganesha here, one is blessed with progeny.

The entire surrounding area is lush with greenery and rich in nature. Villagers often report sightings of wild animals here. Scholars believe that these caves may have been carved even before the Ajanta caves. There are two routes to reach here: one via Soygaon-Galwada-Vetalwadi and the other via Sillod-Undangaon-Halda-Vetalwadi. After traveling some distance on foot from either route, one must descend into a deep valley to reach the Rudreshwar temple at the foothills. These footpaths are about २ kilometers long and test one’s physical endurance, taking about ४० to ४५ minutes to traverse. While walking along these paths, one can hear the rustling of the wind and the chirping of birds. Additionally, one can see the reservoir of the Soygaon dam on the left and the Vetalwadi fort atop a high hill on the right.

Upon reaching the temple premises, one sees the caves carved into black stone behind the waterfall cascading from a height. The sight of the waterfall falling from these caves into the sacred pond (Tirthakunda) in front is mesmerizing. After entering through a narrow cave located ۱۵ to २० steps from the Tirthakunda, one reaches the caves carved in black stone. These caves contain a main hall that is ६० feet long, about २० feet wide, and १२ feet high. In the center, within an arch carved into the rock, stands a five-foot-tall and five-foot-wide vermilion-smeared idol of Lord Ganesha. This Ganesha, with his trunk turned to the left, is flanked by Riddhi and Siddhi. Many devotees come for the darshan of this Ganesha on Angarki and Sankashti Chaturthi. To the right of the Ganesha idol, there is a sculpture of Lord Nrisimha on a pillar, and on the left pillar, there is a three-foot-tall sculpture of Nataraja. It is said that a tunnel behind this Ganesha idol leads all the way to the Ajanta caves. To the right of the Ganesha idol, on a large and high stone pedestal, is a Nandi idol carved from a single piece of black stone. The craftsmanship of the ornaments on this Nandi is unique. The Shivalinga in front of the Nandi is carved into the rock and is believed to be a sub-linga of Grishneshwar. Near the walls, remnants of some ancient idols can be seen. Faint carvings are also visible on the arches and pillars. Due to insufficient light in the caves, the carvings are not clearly visible.

During the month of Shravan, there is a large crowd of devotees here. At that time, stalls selling Bel leaves, flowers, and prasad are set up along the path to the caves. On Mahashivratri, the area takes on the appearance of a fair due to the presence of thousands of devotees. Devotees from Jalgaon, Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalna, Nashik, and Nagar districts come here for darshan.

A short distance from these caves is the Vetalwadi Fort. Located at the highest point of the Ajanta mountain range, this fort has two grand gates that are २० feet high. Many sculptures are carved on the pillars of these gates. Inside the fort, there is a dome-shaped building. Apart from this, the fort’s grand ramparts, bastions, granaries, oil and ghee tanks, the Namjagir Mosque, and a cannon about seven feet long are still in good condition today. Additionally, there is a large water tank on the fort. At the highest point of the fort, there is a Hawa Mahal surrounded by arches. From this Hawa Mahal, one gets a panoramic view of the villages at the foothills.
