A popular legend states that the Pandavas stayed here for some time during their exile. It is a local belief that the Pandavas departed towards Jalgaon Jamod through an underground tunnel located within the temple premises. Known as a deity who fulfills the vows of her devotees, countless pilgrims from the surrounding region come here to seek the blessings of Goddess Jagdamba. A grand ‘Mahabhandara’ (community feast) is held here on Magh Purnima, and during the Sharadiya Navratri festival, devotees gather in large numbers for all nine days.
Just as Maharashtra is known as the land of saints, it is also considered the land of Shakti worship. Nestled amidst the Sahyadri ranges and the Arabian Sea, this state is home to three and a half Shakti Peethas. The Mahalaxmi of Kolhapur, Renuka Mata of Mahur, Bhavani Mata of Tuljapur, and Saptashrungi Mata of Vani are the state’s primary places of faith. Bhavani Mata of Tuljapur, who inspired Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to establish Swarajya, is considered the Kulswamini (family deity) of Maharashtra and a symbol of self-respect. On the Vani Gad in Nashik, the eighteen-armed Jagdamba resides as Saptashrungi Mata; it is believed that her darshan removes the sorrows of devotees. The folk art and culture of Maharashtra are considered incomplete without the worship of Jagdamba. When the ‘Gondhalis’ chant “Aai Jagdambechya Udo Udo…” to the rhythm of the Sambhal and Daf, a divine energy permeates the entire atmosphere.
Religious scriptures mention that this Adi Shakti, who governs the universe, has taken various incarnations across different eras to uphold the Vedas and Puranas, destroy the wicked, and protect the people. There are many ancient temples of Mother Jagdamba, the Mother of the Universe, in the Buldana district. In this district, there are awakened shrines of the Goddess in places like Ghatpuri, Shendala, Sav, Pimpalgaon Devi, Sulaj, Wankhed, Janefal, and Shivni Taka. This temple at Ladnapur is one of them. In the past, this area was part of the Dandakaranya forest. The legend of the five Pandavas staying here for a few days during their exile is prevalent. There is an underground tunnel in the temple premises; it is said that the Pandavas traveled towards Jalgaon Jamod through it. Currently, this tunnel has collapsed. This site is also mentioned in the ‘Pandavpratap’ written by Shridhar Swami. Previously, the temple was small in size, but after a recent renovation, it has attained its current form.
The temple is situated in a scenic location on the banks of the Pandav River at Ladnapur on the Jalgaon Jamod – Partur state highway. One has to climb a few steps to enter the temple. There is a large courtyard around the temple. Near the temple, there is a stone lamp pillar (Deepstambh). The temple structure consists of a Mukh-mandapa (entrance hall), an open Sabha-mandapa (assembly hall), and the Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). In a small niche in the Sabha-mandapa, there is a shrine of Bhairavnath. In the center of the sanctum, on a pedestal, is a large, vermilion-smeared ‘Tandala’ (aniconic stone form) of Goddess Jagdamba. In front of this idol is another vermilion-smeared Tandala. Both these Tandalas have eyes carved on them and tilaks on their foreheads. These Tandalas are adorned with clothes and ornaments. During festivals, silver crowns are placed on both. There is a shikhara (spire) over the entrance hall. The sanctum is topped by a five-tiered shikhara that tapers towards the top. Each level features carved niches. At the top of the shikhara are a two-tiered Amalaka and a Kalash.
Devotees believe that this Goddess never sends anyone back empty-handed. Known as a deity who fulfills vows, there is always a crowd of devotees here for darshan. A grand festival is held in the temple premises on the day of Maghi Purnima. On this day, Mahaprasad is distributed to the devotees. The Sharadiya Navratri festival is the main event here. During this festival, various religious programs like Bhajans and Kirtans are organized for all nine days. A Dandiya-Raas competition is also organized.
