Born in 1907 at Godhegaon on the banks of the Pravara River, Kisangiri Maharaj performed his spiritual practice (*sadhana*) in this region. He received the divine grace and guidance of the accomplished saint Shri Nath Baba of Newasa. Under an Audumbar tree on the banks of the Pravara River, he was blessed with the divine vision (*sakshatkar*) of Lord Dattatreya. Following this, his glory spread as an incarnation (*ansh*) of Shri Datta Maharaj. Numerous devotees began to immerse themselves in devotion to him. With their support, Kisangiri Maharaj resolved to build a Datta temple at his place of spiritual practice, and as a result, a Datta temple was established here in 1957, which is now renowned as Shri Kshetra Devgad.
On the way from Newasa towards Murme village lies the Devgad Phata (junction). The grand first entrance archway of Shri Datta Sansthan is situated there. About 5 km from there is the second and main entrance gate. One enters the holy pilgrimage complex through the tall, wide archways of this grand gate, which evokes the charm of Rajasthani architecture as well as South Indian *gopurams*. Multi-colored trees have been planted along both sides and in the center of this approach road. Meticulously maintained lush greenery is a distinct feature of this complex. In front of the entrance, on the banks of the Pravara River, stands the beautiful temple of Lord Dattatreya. It is a two-storied structure adorned with a four-foot-tall golden *kalash* (pinnacle) on its spire. On both sides of the main entrance, there are tall and exquisitely carved statues of royal elephants (*gajaraja*). The architecture of the temple blends with the Rajasthani style, and the influence of this style is evident in all the structures here. Within the *garbhagriha* (sanctum sanctorum), a sacred marble idol of Lord Dattatreya is consecrated (*prana-pratishtha*).
To the left of the temple lies a garden of Ajaan trees (*Ajaan Vriksha*). When Sant Dnyanoba Mauli was taking *sanjivan samadhi*, he planted his *bhikshudand* (alms staff) at the entrance of the subterranean cave. Over time, this staff sprouted leaves and grew into the sacred Ajaan tree. This tree holds immense spiritual significance in the Warkari tradition. Similarly, the Audumbar tree is revered in the Datta tradition. As an extension of the sacred Audumbar tree under which Kisangiri Maharaj performed his penance, these trees are lovingly nurtured here. Many Warkaris undertake the holy recitation (*parayan*) of Dnyaneshwari in this garden. In the temple courtyard stands the Panchamukhi Shri Siddheshwar Temple, which houses the idols of Lord Ganesha, Lord Kartik Swami, and Goddess Parvati. In front of the sanctum sanctorum rests a beautifully carved marble idol of Nandi.
To the right side of the Datta Temple lies the *samadhi* shrine of Sadguru Kisangiri Maharaj, who took *samadhi* in 1983. In the following year, this Samadhi Temple was built under the guidance of Kisangiri Maharaj’s spiritual successor, Bhaskargiri Maharaj of Shri Kshetra Mahantnagar, Mehun. The main *samadhi* shrine is situated in the lower level of the temple, where a sanctified *samadhi* idol of Maharaj is enshrined. Additionally, the premises feature the elegant ‘Guru Bhavan’, which houses a preserved collection of articles used daily by Kisangiri Maharaj. Temples dedicated to Shanidev and Lord Maruti (Hanuman) are also located within the complex.
Resounding with the continuous chanting of the Guru’s name, divine *bhajans*, and the sacred rhythm of *taal* and *mridangam*, another highlight of this pilgrimage site is the stone *ghat* built on the Pravara River. One can descend into the holy waters of the Pravara via the multi-stepped *ghat*. Boating facilities have been arranged here by the Shri Datta Sansthan. The trust features a vast *mandap* (hall) for *kirtans* and spiritual discourses (*pravachans*). Accommodation (*Bhakta Niwas*) and devotional meal facilities (*mahaprasad*) are provided for devotees. A well-maintained *goshala* (cow shelter) has also been established here.
Thousands of devotees flock to this holy land on Margashirsha Purnima to celebrate the Shri Dattatreya Janma Utsav (birth festival). During this time, various sacred rituals and religious programs are organized in the presence of revered sages and saints from across the country. Additionally, a large number of devotees visit every Thursday and on *Ekadashi*. Devotees can visit the temple for *darshan* of Lord Dattatreya daily from 6:15 AM to 9:00 PM.
