The Goddess is famous as one who fulfills the vows of her devotees. It is said that since Shakti resides alongside Shiva in Trimbakeshwar, a pilgrimage to Trimbakeshwar is considered complete only after devotees have also sought the blessings of this Goddess.
The legend of this Goddess states that while on a pilgrimage, Lord Parashurama arrived at Shri Kshetra Trimbakeshwar to perform penance. After a long period had passed, he felt a deep yearning to see his mother. Unable to bear the separation from his mother, he began to call out to her from Neel Parvat. The Mother Goddess appeared to him in a vision and said, “Do not open your eyes until I have fully emerged from the earth.” Following this, Parashurama sat in meditation with his eyes closed. The Mother began to emerge from the earth. Parashurama grew impatient to behold her. After a few moments, he opened his eyes. However, by then, only the Mother’s body up to her neck had emerged from the earth. Because Parashurama opened his eyes before her entire body could emerge, only the mask of Renuka Mata, or Nilambika, up to the neck appeared. Consequently, the Goddess was consecrated there in that form.
Since this temple is on a hill, there are about 200 steps to reach it. However, a road has now been constructed to reach the temple alongside the steps, allowing vehicles to reach near the temple. There are no shops for food, drinks, or worship materials in the temple premises, but many shops can be found at the base of the mountain. Upon reaching the top, one must descend a few steps to reach the temple. After descending, a spacious temple courtyard comes into view. Along with the Nilambika Devi temple, there is also a Matamba Devi temple and nine temples representing the nine forms of the Goddess at this location.Looking down from here, one can see the city of Trimbak. The temple premises also house the Neelkantheshwar temple, Parashurama temple, and Dattatreya temple. Additionally, there is a trident standing 150 feet tall.
The Nilambika Devi temple is small and made of stone. The temple is painted in golden and silver colors, causing it to shimmer as soon as sunlight falls upon it. The temple has a tiled roof and a wooden pavilion inside. There is a sacrificial altar (Yajnakund) in front of the temple, as well as a statue of a tiger. Upon entering the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, one can see a stone idol adorned with vermilion. The Goddess is decorated and worshipped daily, and floral arrangements are also offered before her every day. A Nanda Deep (an eternal lamp) burns throughout the year in the sanctum sanctorum. This site is a Shakti Peetha and is believed to be a form of Parvati. The temple is ancient, but details regarding the exact period of its construction are not available.
As Trimbakeshwar is considered the land of Shiva, it is said that Shakti also resides here. A grand festival for the Goddess is held here during the month of Chaitra and the Sharadiya Navratri. On Ashwin Shuddha Ashtami, the Trimbakeshwar Sansthan conducts a Navchandi Yajna in the temples of all three Goddesses in the city of Trimbakeshwar: Kolambika, Nilambika, and Bhuvaneshwari.
