The Ballaleshwar Mahadev Mandir, situated at the heart of this city known as the gateway to Raigad district, is considered a significant symbol of this heritage. Temples in the Konkan region are primarily built from a blend of black stone and teak wood. An excellent example of this can be seen in this ancient Shiva temple located on the banks of Vadale Lake in Panvel. This temple is approximately four hundred years old, and its historical connection is linked to the Peshwa era. The expansion of the Maratha Empire and the influence of the Peshwas in the Konkan region during that time led to the construction of many temples and lakes for public welfare. This Ballaleshwar Mahadev Mandir in Panvel is also a part of that tradition.
Historical evidence suggests that the Ballaleshwar Mandir was built by Balaji Krishna Bapat during the Peshwa period. The Bapat family was an influential lineage of that era. They played a crucial role in the social and infrastructural development of Panvel. The purpose of establishing this temple was not only religious but also connected to water management in the region. The names of this temple and the Bapat family are prominently associated with the creation and conservation of the six major lakes in Panvel. According to historical documents, Balajipant Bapat constructed three important reservoirs: Vadale, Krishnale, and Parvati. Among these, Vadale Lake is now also known as Ballaleshwar Lake due to this temple. This lake is adjacent to the Ballaleshwar Mandir. In earlier times, this lake extended over more than चाळीस acres. Although its expanse has diminished over time due to urbanisation, its importance in maintaining Panvel’s underground water level remains significant even today.
This temple is also linked to the Treta Yuga. It is said that when Prabhu Shri Rama journeyed southwards, He resided here for some time and worshipped Mahadev. Compared to other temples on the Konkan coastline, this temple appears to be influenced by the ‘Wada’ style of Maratha architecture. The design of the Ballaleshwar Mahadev Mandir is meticulously planned and scientifically structured. The temple’s foundation is made of strong black basalt stone, which is why this structure has remained unharmed even after चारशे years. Adjacent to Vadale Lake, the temple has a spacious mandap. A tin shed has been installed over this mandap for the convenience of devotees. In this very mandap, in front of the temple, there is a Deepmal (lamp pillar). Further ahead, there is a separate Nandi Mandap. In the centre of the Nandi Mandap, on a Vajra Pitha, rests an idol of Nandi carved from a single stone. The four pillars surrounding this Nandi Mandap are connected at the top by arched mihrabs. Above them are a dome-shaped shikhara and a kalash. From the Nandi Mandap, one enters the Sabhamandap (assembly hall) of the main temple. In the centre of the Sabhamandap, on the ground, there is a large tortoise sculpture and a wooden palanquin of Ballaleshwar Mahadev. In the devakoshthakas (niches) on the front wall of the antarala (vestibule), there are idols of Ganapati and Hanuman. From the Sabhamandap, one proceeds into a small antarala. The entrance to the Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) is distinctive. The front part of this Garbhagriha is adorned with sculptures of various deities. These primarily include an exquisite idol of Bhagwan Ganesha and sculptures of various avatars of Bhagwan Vishnu. A rare and beautiful sculpture of ‘Gajant Lakshmi’ is carved in this artwork, symbolising prosperity and victory. In the centre of the Garbhagriha, slightly elevated from the ground, is an ancient Shiva Lingam carved from a single stone. Behind the Shiva Lingam, an idol of Devi Parvati is enshrined.
Within the main temple complex, there is a wooden temple dedicated to Shri Rama. During the Peshwa period, wooden craftsmanship and painting held great importance. This Ram Mandir is entirely crafted from teak wood and features distinctive artistry. In the Garbhagriha of this temple are marble idols of Prabhu Shri Rama, Sita Mata, and Lakshmana. The presence of two different architectural styles – a stone Shiva temple and a wooden Ram temple – within the same premises is a unique feature of this place. Additionally, to the left of the temple, there is a small temple of Bhagwan Dattatreya, housing a marble idol of Dattaguru.
The Ballaleshwar Mandir has been a place of devotion for many prominent families of Panvel. Vaidya Krishnashastri Puranik, the founder of the renowned Ayurvedic institution ‘Dhootpapeshwar,’ and his subsequent generations have made significant contributions to the preservation of this temple and lake. As this temple is directly opposite the Dhootpapeshwar factory, the employees and officials of this institution still visit daily for darshan. Furthermore, the famous actress Deepika Chikhalia, who portrayed Sita in the Ramayana series, also visited this Ballaleshwar Mandir and praised its tranquility and spiritual energy.
Mahashivaratri is the biggest festival celebrated at this temple. On this day, thousands of devotees from Panvel, Navi Mumbai, and surrounding talukas come here for darshan. The entire Vadale Lake and temple premises are illuminated with lamps during this time. On the night of Mahashivaratri, special pujas are performed for Mahadev during all four prahars (periods of the night), and Shivlilamrita is recited. The temple trust arranges fasting snacks and Mahaprasad for devotees. Additionally, there is a special crowd every Monday during the Shravan month. During Shravan, the Shiva Lingam is adorned with attractive arrangements of belpatras and flowers. Cultural programs, including music, kirtan, and pravachan, are also organised in the temple premises during Ganesh Chaturthi. Devotees can have darshan here daily from early morning until late at night.
