Situated on the banks of the Godavari River, this city preserves a rich cultural and religious heritage that can be witnessed through its many temples. Among these is the 13th-century Shiva Temple at Kokamthan, located in a serene, nature-rich environment. Both the exterior structure and the interior walls of this Hemadpanti-style temple are adorned with intricate carvings. It is believed that Lord Mahadeva and Lord Vishnu met at this site, which is why the temple is also famous as ‘Harihareshwar’.
There are approximately 200 small and large temples in and around Kopargaon city in the Ahilyanagar district. Important religious sites here include the Shukracharya Temple, Sanjivani Par, Kacheshwar Temple, Saibaba Tapobhumi, Swami Janardhan Maharaj (Maungiri), Janglidas Maharaj, Upasani Maharaj, Vibhandak Rishi Ashram, Shringeshwar Temple, Mahanubhav Ashram, and the Samadhi of Changdev Maharaj at Puntamba. Furthermore, the ‘Namdev Gatha’ and the biography of ‘Changdev Samadhi’ mention that Saint Nivruttinath and Saint Muktai stayed in this area for a month while traveling for the Samadhi ceremony of Saint Changdev Maharaj.
The Kokamthan Shiva Temple has been declared a protected monument by the Central Government. The spacious premises of the temple, situated along the banks of the Godavari, are enclosed by boundary walls and wire fencing. The stones from the base to the spire of the temple are designed with interlocking joints and grooves, allowing them to fit together tightly. Because they are interlocked, they appear as a single, unified structure—a hallmark of Hemadpanti temple architecture.
This east-facing temple consists of a Mukhamandapa (entrance porch), Sabhamandapa (main hall), and Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). The temple stands on a high Jagati (platform). One enters the temple after climbing 8 to 10 steps, where a statue of Nandi is located. Numerous sculptures are carved onto the pillars of the entrance porch and the doorway of the main hall. Every pillar in the main hall is beautifully decorated with intricate carvings. A unique feature here is the stone chandelier on the ceiling of the main hall. This exquisitely crafted chandelier is a major attraction of the temple. A similar stone chandelier can also be found in the Jagadamba Temple at Tahakari in the Akole taluka of Ahilyanagar district. On the Lalatbimba (the central sculpture on the upper lintel of the door frame) of the sanctum, there is an image of Garuda. Inside the sanctum, there is a Shiva Linga, with a statue of Lord Vishnu behind it. The ceiling of the sanctum features carvings of Yakshas and Gandharvas dancing and playing musical instruments. Due to the Garuda sculpture on the lintel and the presence of the Vishnu statue in the sanctum, it is speculated that this may have originally been a Vishnu temple.
The temple spire is made of bricks and is composed of smaller, finely carved miniature spires. The main spire features sculptures of a Shiva Linga and Lord Vishnu. Along with these, there are numerous sculptures of Sursundaris, Yakshas and Gandharvas playing musical instruments, Ashtadikpalas (deities guarding the eight directions), and various other gods and goddesses.
The main festival celebrated here is Mahashivratri. On this day, the temple and its surroundings are beautifully decorated, and the temple is illuminated with attractive lighting. Programs such as Maha-Abhishek and Maha-Aarti are organized. Thousands of devotees visit for Darshan on this day, giving the area the atmosphere of a fair. There is also a large crowd of devotees on Shravani Mondays. Devotees can visit the temple for Darshan between 6:00 AM and 7:00 PM. The daily Aarti takes place at 9:00 AM. This beautiful temple on the banks of the Godavari at Kokamthan is considered the pride of Kopargaon.
