Temple Itinerary & Overview

The Guru Shukracharya Temple at Bet Kopargaon in Ahilyanagar district is the only place in the state renowned for the belief that one does not need to consult an auspicious time (Muhurat) for weddings, religious ceremonies, or any auspicious work. This site, sanctified by the residence and ascetic power of the demon-preceptor Shukracharya, holds a mythological and historical tradition spanning thousands of years. Once a part of the Dandakaranya forest, this region is known today as Shri Kshetra Bet, Shukratirtha, or the Bet of Guru Shukracharya Temple.

One day, Devayani, the daughter of Shukracharya, went to the forest with the princess Sharmishtha. While they were bathing in the river, a sudden storm caused their clothes on the bank to get mixed up. In their haste, the garments were swapped. As a princess, Sharmishtha naturally became angry; she pushed Devayani into a well and left for the palace. Devayani tried to climb out of the well and began calling for help. At that time, the Kshatriya King Yayati was passing through the area for a hunt. He heard Devayani’s voice. Upon looking into the well, he saw her pleading for help. To save a woman in distress, King Yayati reached out his hand and pulled Devayani out of the well.

In ancient times, women would not take the hand of a man who was not their husband, as the act of holding hands was considered the Panigrahana ritual—a marriage. Even though the hand-holding was accidental and done only to save Devayani from danger, the King was bound to marry her. However, King Yayati was a Kshatriya and Devayani was a Brahmin maiden, making such a marriage impossible. Furthermore, the planetary positions were not favorable at the time of their union, as the Simhastha period was ongoing. Yet, the marriage had to take place. To ensure there were no obstacles, Guru Shukracharya performed a Vivaha Siddha Homa on the banks of the Godavari, where the ashram currently stands, and solemnized the wedding.

Guru Shukracharya used his ascetic power to sanctify this land and declared that henceforth, any man or woman of any caste could marry at this site without needing to consider planetary positions, dates, days, the Simhastha period, or any auspicious timing. They would be free from marriage-related defects and lead a happy married life. The site where Guru Shukracharya performed the Vivaha Siddha Homa in his ashram is the present-day Guru Shukracharya Temple.

The Shukracharya Temple in the Bet Kopargaon area resembles a traditional mansion from the outside and is surrounded by strong fortifications on all four sides. In the temple courtyard, there is a lamp pillar (Deepmal), and at the entrance, there are sculptures of two elephants. The temple architecture consists of a Nandi Mandapa, Sabha Mandapa, and the sanctum sanctorum (Gabhara). Inside the sanctum, on a golden throne, sits a white marble idol of Guru Shukracharya. In front of him is a Shiva Linga made of black stone. It is said that this Shiva Linga was installed by Guru Shukracharya himself. As general entry into the sanctum is restricted, devotees worship the Guru Padukas located at the entrance. The temple premises also house a library, the palanquin of Guru Shukracharya, and a museum of ancient artifacts.

Wedding ceremonies are held at this temple throughout the year. Special pavilions are arranged for these ceremonies. The temple trust provides rooms for the bride and groom’s families. The trust also conducts free wedding ceremonies for poor and disabled couples. Additionally, the festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated here on a grand scale.
