Temple Itinerary & Overview

Adishti Devi of Khambale in Vaibhavwadi Taluka is the revered village deity. She is worshipped as a form of Adi Shakti. According to local lore, Adishti of Khambale is the biological sister of Adishti Devi of Vaibhavwadi, and also of Rasai Devi of Achirne. The local populace holds a deep faith that this Goddess rushes to the call of the ‘Maherwashinis’ (women from this village who are married and have moved to their in-laws’ homes) and graciously fulfills their vows. There was an ancient temple of Adishti in Khambale. In 2004, it was renovated, and a grand temple was constructed.

Nestled between the Salwa mountain to the west and the Sahyadri range to the east, Khambale village is situated on the Vaibhavwadi-Fonda road. The Devi’s temple is located right next to the main road in the village. The temple has a large courtyard, and at its entrance stands a grand, arched, colorful gate made of cement-concrete. Upon entering, one beholds a ‘Deepmala’ (lamp tower) erected on a large platform directly ahead. Adjacent to this Deepmala’s platform is a Tulsi Vrindavan (sacred basil garden). A short distance further, the main temple stands majestically in the center of the courtyard. The temple’s structure comprises a Mukhamandapa (front porch) extending outwards, a Sabhamandapa (assembly hall), and the Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). The Mukhamandapa is supported by four intricately carved pillars. Above it, and also above the Sabhamandapa, are two roofs stacked one upon the other, reminiscent of a pagoda. One enters the Sabhamandapa by ascending two steps from the Mukhamandapa. Stone benches have been built on the outer side of the Sabhamandapa, beside these steps, for devotees to rest.

The Sabhamandapa is rectangular and open-plan. It features four intricately carved pillars connected by arched alcoves on both sides, with seating arrangements (Kakasane) between them, and a marble floor below, defining the character of this hall. Further within, beyond the circumambulation path (Pradakshina Marg), lies the Garbhagriha. Ascending two steps, one first enters the Antarala (vestibule). Here, on one side, five sacred staffs (Kathya) of deities are arranged. The Garbhagriha has a wooden-framed entrance. On either side of it, small niches (Devalya) are built into the walls. In one niche is an idol of the Goddess, and in the other, an idol of Ganapati. Within the sanctum, on a distinctive Vajra Peetha (diamond pedestal), rests a small cylindrical stone representing Adishti Devi at the center, and on its sides are placed several small and large stone slabs (Shila) of other deities. Outside this temple, adjacent to the Garbhagriha on the right side, is a small Itlai (Vitthalai) temple, while on the other side is the Mirashi temple. In the Itlai Devi temple, a stone idol of Itlai rests on a Vajra Peetha, while in the Mirashi Devi temple, two ‘Veergal’ (hero stones) are arranged. Within the temple premises, beneath a large ancient tree, six ‘Sati Shila’ (sati stones) and Veergal are arranged.

In the Adishti Devi Temple, festivals such as Navratrotsav, Shimogotsav, Tripurari Pournima, Akshaya Tritiya, and Akhand Harinam Saptah are celebrated with great devotion. During Navratrotsav, on Vijayadashami, a large crowd of ‘Maherwashinis’ gathers to offer ‘Oti’ (a traditional offering) to the Goddess. Along with the Adishti Devi Temple, this village also hosts temples dedicated to Khandoba, Shankar, Khambdev, Shri Datta, Hanuman, and Bhairav Bhavani. A large waterfall is located three kilometers from Khambale village. During the monsoon season, a large number of tourists visit there.
