Temple Itinerary & Overview

Maharashtra is a land abundant with diverse forts, marvelous places, and sacred temples. Among them, Jalgaon district is home to many ancient and architecturally rich temples. Some of these temples were designated as national monuments many years before the country gained independence. Among them is the Devi Temple located in Dighi village of Pachora taluka. Built about 800 years ago, this ancient and sculpturally exquisite temple is considered the glory of Dighi village. Hundreds of devotees, along with scholars of iconography and architecture, visit this rare jewel of a temple.

Dighi is a small village in Jalgaon district. The ancient temple of the Goddess is situated in the central part of the village. This temple is recorded as ‘Devi’ in the Jalgaon Gazetteer, while in the Archaeological Department, it is registered as the Temple of Devi and Sambha (Shiva). Among the villagers, however, it is renowned as the temple of Durga Bhavani or Mahishasuramardini. According to the Archaeological Department, this temple dates back to the thirteenth century. It stands on a large stone plinth approximately 10 feet high alongside the road leading into the village. Climbing eight to ten steps leads into the temple courtyard. An ancient Deepastambha (lamp tower) stands in front of the temple in the courtyard. The temple is constructed on a platform about four feet high, leaving a circumambulatory path (Pradakshina Marga) around the exterior.

The architectural layout of this temple comprises a Mukhamandapa (entrance porch), a Sabhamandapa (assembly hall), and a Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). Climbing seven steps from the courtyard leads into the Mukhamandapa. There are large stone platforms on both sides of these steps. The Mukhamandapa is semi-open and features stone Kakshasanas (bench-like seating) on both sides supported by pillars. A Kakshasana arrangement is also present on the front platform of the Mukhamandapa. On the outer walls of the Mukhamandapa pilasters are carved, and human figures are sculpted between every two pilasters. On the inner four pillars, square niches in the center showcase carvings of animals and human figures. Weight-bearing Yakshas are carved on the brackets atop the pillars.

Moving ahead leads into the Sabhamandapa, which is enclosed. Near the front wall of the Garbhagriha in the Sabhamandapa, there is a damaged idol of Lord Vishnu. It is said that this idol originally resided in the sanctum sanctorum, but due to being damaged, it was placed here. In a niche on the left wall of the Sabhamandapa, there is an ancient vermilion-coated idol of Lord Ganesha. The walls feature exquisite carvings and various sculptures. The ceiling of the Sabhamandapa consists of concentric descending circular rings, which originally featured unique sculptures of Surasundaris (celestial maidens) in four directions. However, as two of the sculptures were stolen by unknown persons, only two remain today. One Surasundari is playing a Mardala (a small drum-like percussion instrument), while the other is in a dancing posture. Below these Surasundari figures are sculptures of Yakshinis, some holding various musical instruments in their hands. Niches on the walls house sculptures of Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman, and various deities. A distinctive feature of this temple is that despite the passage of centuries, many of its intricate carvings remain well-preserved.

The doorframe (Dwarashakha) of the Garbhagriha features intricate floral latticework. At the base of the doorframe on both sides are carved figures of female door-keepers (Dwarapalikas). The pillar moldings adjacent to the doorframe also carry detailed carvings. The figure of Lord Ganesha adorns the Lalatabimba (center of the lintel). The lintel (Uttaranga) above the doorway is sculpted with men and women playing music and dancing, men wrestling, as well as Lord Hanuman in combat. In the Garbhagriha of the temple resides the majestic idol of eighteen-armed Mahishasuramardini seated on a tiger. Displaying a fierce expression, this idol is crafted resting against a stone pedestal (Vajrapitha) and the rear wall of the sanctum sanctorum. The idol holds various divine weapons in Her hands, with one hand holding the severed head of the demon. The Goddess wears a crown on Her head, a nose ring (Nath), and various ornaments around Her neck.

The Mukhamandapa, Sabhamandapa, and Garbhagriha are surmounted by Shikharas (spires), with the Shikharas over the Sabhamandapa and Garbhagriha featuring Amalakas and Kalashas (sacred finials). Surrounded by several ancient trees and paved with blocks in the courtyard, the surroundings evoke a tranquil and delightful atmosphere. During the British rule in 1920, this temple was declared an important National Monument by the Archaeological Department. Adjacent to the temple stands the memorial of freedom fighter Mahadu Motiram Pardeshi of Dighi, featuring a Nandi, a Shiva Linga, and a relief sculpture of Mahadu Pardeshi on the back wall. The Navratri festival is the major annual celebration here, during which many devotees from the surrounding region visit to seek blessings.
