Temple Itinerary & Overview

Just as temples in India are known by the names of gods and goddesses, they are also recognized by the names of sages, saints, ascetics, and renunciates. The ancient and famous temple of Sage Shukacharya, the son of Vyasa, is located in the hilly region near Hivatad village in Atpadi taluka. Shukacharya was born with complete knowledge of the Vedas. In his birth as a Shuka (parrot), he heard the dialogue between Shiva and Parvati regarding the nature of the world. Consequently, his attachment to worldly pleasures vanished, and he attained the knowledge of liberation. As this is the site of his Nirvana, this temple, built in the Hemadpanti architectural style, holds special significance.

Although this temple is seven hundred to eight hundred years old, it is said that the caves here date back thousands of years. Shukacharya had no desires or attachments. Even while embodied, he remained in a state of disembodied consciousness (Videhi). Because of this, even the celestial nymphs (Apsaras) moved freely and without hesitation in his presence. It is said that Shukacharya narrated the Bhagavata Purana in a concise form to King Parikshit in the cave here. The legend of the temple states that seeing Shukacharya’s growing spiritual power (Tapobala), Indra feared his throne was becoming unstable. Indra sent Apsaras to the cave to disrupt Shukacharya’s penance. After realizing Indra’s deceit through his divine intuition, Shukacharya decided to withdraw his avatar and vanished into the rocks of the cave here. It is said that this temple was built at this very spot.

One can reach the Shukacharya temple by climbing about one hundred and twenty-five steps from the outskirts of Hivatad village. On one side of the steps is a mountain cliff, and on the other, a valley. Along the path of the steps is a Dharamshala building. Arrangements are made here for the stay of devotees arriving from afar. Further ahead, at some distance, is a plaque narrating the Shuka Mahatmya . Beyond this are three Gomukhs (cow-faced water spouts). From one of these, a continuous natural flow of water falls into the pond below. Behind the Gomukh, on the pond, are idols of Shiva and Nandi. Beside the Nandi is an ancient, broken Veergal (hero stone). After purifying themselves with this water, devotees proceed toward the temple.

In the temple courtyard, next to the Tulsi Vrindavan, are a Naga sculpture and an idol of Nandi. There are also some Samadhi sites here. In the cave right next to them is a Shiva Linga. From here, one proceeds to the Sabhamandap (assembly hall) of the temple. The Sabhamandap, which is at a higher level than the courtyard, is reached by climbing three steps. The Sabhamandap has four rows of four ornate pillars each. The outer pillars are square, while the six pillars in the middle rows are of various geometric shapes, including hexagonal, octagonal, circular, square, and triangular. At the top of the pillars are capitals, and above them are brackets. On the brackets rest the beams, and on the beams is the ceiling. The entire construction of the Sabhamandap is in carved stone. It contains the Samadhi of Shivgiri Maharaj, as well as idols of Ganpati, Bhairav, and a Shiva Linga.

The carvings on the doorframe of the Antarala (vestibule) ahead and the sculpture on the Lalatbimba (lintel) have become indistinct. In the Antarala, there is a Shiva Linga on a Vajrapitha, and in the cave near the wall, there are two Samadhis. From here, one reaches the entrance of the Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). It is said that the rock face on one side of the cave-like Garbhagriha is the back of Shukacharya. Devotees come to the temple, seek blessings from Shukacharya’s back, and express their wishes. There is a brass mask of Shukacharya here. In the cave adjacent to the temple is the Yajna chamber. In another cave nearby is a meditative idol of Shukacharya.

In the wall of the platform surrounding the Banyan tree in the courtyard, there are remains of an ancient Shikhara and a Vyala sculpture. On this platform are a Naga, an idol of Panchmukhi Hanuman, some broken Veergal, a Shiva Linga, and Nandi. In a niche in the fortification wall, there is an idol of Maruti smeared with vermilion. Nearby is the residence of the temple priest. There are five steps to enter the meditation cave located in a crevice in the basement of this residence. From here, there is a small platform with stones representing local deities, some conch shells, and images. Beside it is an idol of Dattatreya carved into the mountain rock. Further ahead are storage rooms and shops for worship materials. Along the iron fencing in the courtyard, seating arrangements are provided for devotees. Descending a few steps from the temple courtyard on the path toward Hivatad village, there is the temple’s cowshed (Goshala) and a room where the chariot used during festivals is kept.

The temple is crowded with devotees on all Mondays of Shravan, as well as throughout the month of Adhik Maas. The annual festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated in the temple with great enthusiasm. At this time, thousands of devotees from Sangli, Satara, and Kolhapur districts come for the deity’s Darshan. The natural beauty of the Shukacharya mountain area and the monsoon waterfalls are attractions for tourists.
