The name Yogeshwari eventually evolved into Jogeshwari. This Goddess is also known as Jogai. There is a shrine dedicated to this Jogeshwari in Mumbai, and she resides under the name Jogai at Ambejogai in Marathwada. In Yelavan, located in the historically and religiously significant district of Kolhapur, this Goddess is enshrined as Jugai. The ancient temple of the Goddess here is a place of faith for millions of devotees. It is the firm belief of the devotees that this Goddess fulfills their vows (Navas).
It is said that the seat of Jugai Devi here dates back about 700 years. The legend of the temple states that Jugai is the sister of Jotiba and is the Jogai Mata of Ambejogai village. When the Goddess came to visit Jotiba, he insisted that she stay here in the bamboo forest (Veluvan). The Goddess agreed to stay on the condition that her annual festival (Jatrotsav) would be held alongside her brother’s, and as per his request, she took the form of a stone (Shila) and resided here. In the dense forest, a cow sensed the presence of the Goddess and would habitually shed her milk over the stone, performing an abhishekam to the Goddess. A cowherd witnessed this scene and informed the village. The villagers then built a temple over the stone of the Goddess and began performing daily worship and celebrating annual festivals.
While going from the village towards the temple, there is the first welcome arch in the middle of the road. Further ahead is the temple boundary wall and two entrance gates. Both entrance gates of the boundary wall have two pillars on each side with a balcony-like roof over them. On this roof, there are three spires (Shikharas) — one in the center and two on the sides of the pillars. From here, one enters the temple courtyard. In the courtyard, on the left side, there is a platform with stones of local deities and a Tulsi Vrindavan. In front of the temple entrance, there is a unique well. The outer wall of the well features 21 ornate pillars and 12 niches (Devakoshthakas). These niches contain ancient stone idols of various deities. Over time, these idols have suffered significant erosion. On the edge of the well, a replica of a lotus flower is carved, upon which are idols of Ganpati and Mushakraj. There are steps to descend into this well. On the arch at the lower level, there is a carving of a pair of peacocks, and above it is a sculpture of a water goddess (Jal-devi). There are idols of various deities in the six niches located in the walls on both sides of the steps.
The temple structure consists of a Sabha Mandap (assembly hall), Antarala (vestibule), and Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). The Sabha Mandap is built of stone and is semi-open. Its ten pillars are connected to each other by crescent-shaped arches. There is an ornate arch at the entrance of the Antarala. The Antarala has doors on the left and right sides for exit. Beyond that is the entrance to the Garbhagriha. The stone construction of the Garbhagriha follows the Hemadpanti architectural style. The Garbhagriha is slightly elevated compared to the Antarala. All three door frames of the Garbhagriha are decorated with floral and leaf carvings. There is an idol of Lord Ganesha on the lintel (Lalat-bimba).
Inside the stone shrine (Makhar) of the Garbhagriha, on a Vajra-pitha, stands the four-armed idol of the Goddess, carved in black stone, about two feet tall. In her two right hands, the Goddess holds a sword and a trident, and in her two left hands, she holds a severed head and a shield. Beside this idol is the brass processional idol of the Goddess. Behind the idol is a silver Prabhaval (halo). The halo features a Kirtimukh at the top and floral carvings on the sides. On both pillars in front of the shrine, there are tiger sculptures at the base. Auspicious symbols like the Kalash are carved on the arches connecting the pillars. There is a Ganpati in the center of the arch. The dome-shaped ceiling of the Garbhagriha is created through a specific arrangement of beams.
On the circumambulation path (Pradakshina marg) outside the Garbhagriha, there are 12 niches containing ancient idols of various deities. There are several windows in the circumambulation path for light and ventilation. Above the Garbhagriha, there is an 11-tiered square spire. Each tier of the spire has a Bashingi-style carving on all four sides. On the top tier of the spire is the Amalaka, followed by the Kalash and the temple flag. To the left of this temple is a Shiva temple. The spire of the Shiva temple features a five-hooded serpent and a replica of a Shiva Linga. Inside the sanctum, there is a Shiva Linga with Nandi in front.
Annual festivals such as Chaitra Padwa, Navratri, Dussehra, Diwali, Mahashivratri, and Tripurari Purnima are celebrated at the Jugai temple. The annual Jatrotsav of the Goddess is celebrated with great enthusiasm on Chaitra Purnima. At midnight, the Goddess’s palanquin (Palkhi) leaves the temple for a procession around the village. At this time, Sasan-kathis (ceremonial poles) arrive from areas like Tok, Nandgaon, Miraj, Islampur, Man, Molwade, and Thergaon. The palanquin is honored with drums, cymbals, flags, and whisks. Thousands of devotees from all over the state come here for the darshan of the Goddess and to fulfill their vows. Devotees can have darshan of Jugai Devi in this temple daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
