One such saint in this illustrious lineage is Shri Brahmachaitanya Gondavalekar Maharaj. Gondavale in Satara district is the birthplace of Gondavalekar Maharaj, who immersed millions of devotees in the devotion of the name of Rama and preached the glory of Annadan (offering food). Situated on the banks of the Manganga River in Man Taluka, the village of Gondavale is today renowned across the country as a holy pilgrimage site due to the Maharaj’s residence here.
Gondavalekar Maharaj was born in 1845. His original name was Ganpati Raoji Ghugardare. He grew up in a religious environment. Inspired by the bhajans, kirtans, and scriptural recitations he heard from childhood, he developed a sense of detachment and left home at the age of twelve in search of a Guru. During this period, he met many contemporary saints, including Sadhvi Radhabai of Haripur (Sangli), the saint Annabuva of Miraj, Dev Mamledar of Satana, Shri Swami of Akkalkot, Manik Prabhu of Humnabad, Tailang Swami of Kashi, and Shri Ramakrishna Paramahansa of Dakshineswar. Shri Ramakrishna advised him to go to Shri Tukaram Chaitanya of Yehalegaon. After undergoing rigorous tests, his Guru initiated him and bestowed upon him the name ‘Brahmachaitanya’. Having found his Sadguru and following the path shown by him, he attained a state of complete spiritual perfection at the tender age of fifteen.
Gondavalekar Maharaj spent his life preaching to common devotees, teaching them the easiest path to attain God. He constantly advised devotees to remember Lord Rama continuously, stating that devotion to Rama makes worldly life blissful and that by becoming absorbed in the Name, one experiences the presence of Rama behind them. He built many temples of Shri Rama, Shri Datta, and Shanidev across the country and encouraged others to build temples as well. Shri Gondavalekar Maharaj personally established over 25 Rama temples across the nation. These include the Thorle Ram Mandir, Atpadi Datta Mandir, and Dhakte Ram Mandir (Gondavale), Beldhadi Ram Mandir and Anandram Mandir (Jalna), Javalgekar Ram Mandir (Solapur), Tilvankar Ram Mandir (Varanasi), Pattabhiram Ram Mandir (Harda, Madhya Pradesh), Sorati Ram Mandir (Ujjain), Mandve Ram Mandir (Solapur), Yavangal Ram Mandir (Karnataka), Datta Mandir (Satara), and the Rama temple at Atpadi. Additionally, he renovated hundreds of other temples.
During the severe famines of 1876 and 1896, he opened his grain stores for the people of Gondavale and surrounding villages. He provided employment to people on his own farms and arranged for their daily meals. He provided free food to the weak, the poor, and the elderly. Seeing this noble work, the then King of Aundh also praised him. Gondavalekar Maharaj had great compassion for animals. He would buy cows from the butchers at the nearby Mhaswad market to save their lives and built a cowshed (Goshala) for them.
Throughout his life, he propagated and promoted the Ramdasi tradition. He breathed his last in Gondavale on December 22, 1913. His Samadhi is located here. The Samadhi temple was constructed in 1936-37. The temple features a spacious assembly hall (Sabhamandap), and in the sanctum sanctorum in front of it, there is an idol of Gopal Krishna. The Maharaj’s Samadhi site is located below the sanctum sanctorum, accessible by descending a flight of stairs. On the Samadhi, there are idols of Shri Rama, Lakshman, Sita, and Maruti. The chant ‘Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram’ is recited continuously in the temple. Hundreds of devotees gather in the assembly hall for the Maharaj’s morning and evening Aarti. Daily kirtan and bhajan programs are held here.
Behind the Samadhi temple is a Tulsi Vrindavan. Next to it, in a large pavilion, is the Samadhi of the Maharaj’s mother. To the west of the temple is the Goshala, which houses various types of cows, named after different rivers. A large number of devotees visit here every Thursday and on Purnima (full moon day). The temple trust provides free Mahaprasad to all visiting devotees and offers accommodation in the Bhakta Niwas. Apart from this, thousands of devotees visit the Samadhi temple for darshan on other days as well. Devotees can have darshan of the Maharaj’s Samadhi from 4:30 AM to 10:00 PM.
The Thorle Ram Mandir in Gondavale village, located one kilometer from the Samadhi temple, and the Hanuman temple in front of it, also hold great spiritual and historical significance.
According to the biography and literature of Gondavalekar Maharaj, he left home in his childhood in search of a Guru, and after receiving the Guru’s grace and the name ‘Brahmachaitanya’, he arrived at the Hanuman temple in Gondavale in 1865. He stayed here for many days. When the news spread that a Mahatma had arrived at the temple, the Maharaj’s parents came to meet him there.
After seeking his parents’ blessings, the Maharaj went on a pilgrimage and returned to Gondavale exactly one year later. Along with its spiritual importance, this temple also holds historical significance.
The first spark of the 1942 freedom struggle in Man Taluka was ignited in this temple, and the ‘Quit India’ movement call of Mahatma Gandhi was proclaimed from this temple by freedom fighters Dhondiram Nana Pisal and Sambhajirao Tatyasaheb Patil.
