This temple is renowned for its unique architectural style and astronomical design. According to historians, this temple dates back to the twelfth to thirteenth century. The distinctive architecture of this temple is its most remarkable feature. While constructing the temple, the builders applied such precise knowledge of astronomy that on specific days of the year, the rays of the rising sun pass through the horns of Nandi and a stone window, falling directly upon the Shivpindi in the sanctum sanctorum. Witnessing this solar Abhishek is a spiritually blissful experience for devotees.
Nestled on the banks of the Vaan River, this temple is enclosed by a robust fortification wall about ten feet high. This fortification features entry gateways in all four directions. The main entrance on the southern side is double-storied. Paintings of guardian deities are depicted on both sides of the gateway. Above the entrance is an arched Toran (ornamental arch). Below this Toran, within a recessed alcove, is a sculpture of Lord Ganesha. Adjoining the fortification on the outer side of the entrance, a staircase leads up to the second-story Nagarkhana (drum house). Next to the Nagarkhana is the office of the temple trust. The gateway features intricately carved wooden doors. Inside the entrance, there are guard rooms on both sides.
Stepping through the gateway leads into the spacious courtyard of the temple. Several pavilions (Mandaps) have been erected in the courtyard for various purposes. These include residential quarters for temple servants and priests, as well as a resthouse for devotees. Near the temple in the courtyard stands a Tulsi Vrindavan. According to the villagers, the Nagnath Mahadev Temple is more than a thousand years old. The temple layout comprises a Darshan Mandap, Sabhamandap, Antaral (vestibule), and Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). In the Darshan Mandap, resting on a Vajrapitha, is an idol of Nandi carved from black stone. In the stone wall behind Nandi, there is a square lattice window (Gavaksha). On specific days of the year, the sun rays entering through the eastern grand gateway of the temple travel through this Gavaksha, passing successively through the Darshan Mandap, Sabhamandap, and Antaral, finally illuminating the Shivpindi of Lord Mahadeva. The Darshan Mandap is completely open on its left and right sides. It contains about twenty square pillars that support beams, which in turn hold the ceiling. Rituals such as Janan Shanti (birth-related propitiations) and Shraddha ceremonies are performed in the Darshan Mandap. On the left side of the Darshan Mandap, in the front wall of the Sabhamandap, there is a recessed alcove housing an idol of Lord Ganesha.
Ahead lies the entrance to the Sabhamandap. The doorjambs are adorned with floral and leaf carvings, and the Lalatbimba (centerpiece) features a sculpture of Lord Ganesha. The Toran is embellished with miniature temple spire sculptures. The entrance has intricately carved wooden doors. There are doors on both the left and right sides of the Sabhamandap. The ceiling features concentric circular carvings. Further ahead is the entrance to the Antaral, which is fitted with carved wooden doors. The Antaral is narrow, and since the Garbhagriha is elevated higher than the Antaral, there is a step right in front of the entrance to the sanctum sanctorum.
Inside the Garbhagriha, a large Swayambhu Shivpindi rests on the floor. The Shalunka (base) of the Shivpindi is square. A brass serpent (Naag) with its hood spread forms a canopy over the Shivpindi. Additionally, a copper Abhishek vessel, designed to continuously drip water, is suspended from the ceiling. Regarding the divine sun-ray illumination (Kiranotsav) occurring on this Shivpindi, legend has it that Surya Dev (the Sun God) himself visits to have Darshan of Lord Nagnath Mahadev on certain specific days of the year. When the morning rays of the Sun God pass through Nandi’s horns and the temple’s stone window to directly perform an Abhishek on the Shivpindi lying in the darkness of the sanctum sanctorum, the devotees here consider it a profound divine revelation.
Crowning the roof of the Garbhagriha is a three-tiered octagonal spire (Shikhar). The lower two tiers of the spire each feature eight recessed alcoves. At the very apex of the spire is a Stupika, surmounted by a Kalsas (sacred pot) and a temple flag (Dhvajapataka). Adjacent to this temple is a smaller shrine housing the Someshwar Pindi.
Paush Paurnima is the primary annual festival celebrated here with immense enthusiasm and devotion. On this occasion, the approximately thirty-five-kilogram Panchaloha (five-metal alloy) divine mask is placed in a Palkhi (palanquin) and taken around the village in a grand procession accompanied by the beating of Dhol-Tasha and the joyful showering of Gulal (colored powder). During this time, numerous devotees from the surrounding region flock to the temple to have the Lord’s Darshan and to fulfill their sacred vows (Navas). Festivals and holy occasions such as Mahashivratri, the sacred month of Shravan, Adhik Maas, Dussehra, and Diwali are celebrated with great fervor at the temple. During all major festivals, programs such as Maha Abhishek, devotional singing (Bhajan, Kirtan, Pravachan), and Mahaprasad are organized. Large crowds of devotees visit the temple on Mondays, Paurnima (Full Moon), Amavasya (New Moon), and other auspicious days.
