There are many places in Konkan where this Ganapati resides. The Ganesh Utsav here is celebrated with great joy, enthusiasm, and fervor. After the festival concludes, devotees immerse the Ganesh idols at the local seashores. However, Burondi in Dapoli Taluka is a unique village where Ganapati arrived from the sea and was installed in a temple. The villagers believe that ever since this Ganapati arrived in the village, it has been prospering.
Burondi is a village situated on the seashore in the Dapoli taluka of Ratnagiri district. The majority of the people in this village belong to the Koli and Kharvi communities. The livelihood of these communities depends entirely on the sea here. Fishing is their primary occupation. It is said that once, four members of the same family from this village—Durvas, Nandkumar Sakharkar, and two others—had gone into the deep sea near Harne port for fishing in their boat. This incident took place in the year 2006. While casting their nets into the water, they noticed a piece of wood floating there. Out of curiosity, when they tried to pull the wood into the boat, they realized that it was a beautiful wooden idol of Ganpati. After taking the idol into the boat, they thought that someone must have immersed it in the water; therefore, they worshipped the idol and released it back into the water.
After casting their nets into the sea, the Sakharkar brothers moved some distance away, only to see the same idol floating near their boat again. Thereafter, they As they ventured further into the deep sea to cast their nets, they were left in shock. The same idol was once again floating near their boat. Perceiving this as a divine sign, they brought the idol onto their boat. Upon inspecting whether the idol was worn out or damaged, they found that there was not even a single scratch on it. It was an idol of Lord Ganapati, carved from a single piece of wood and featuring three faces. Ultimately, resolving to take this idol to their village, the brothers brought it to their home in the village.
The Sakharkar brothers gathered the villagers and narrated the entire incident that occurred at sea. Subsequently, the villagers reached a unanimous decision and consecrated the idol in the ancient temple of Shri Savardev in the village on the day of Maghi Ganesh Jayanti. This standing idol of Ganapati, one meter in height and carved from rosewood, features three faces. The idol has six arms. Among these, the right hands hold a pasha (noose), a weapon, and a broken tusk, while the left hands hold a pasha, a weapon, and a laddu. The girdle on Ganapati’s waist, the necklace around his neck, and other ornaments on his body are brought to life through intricate, delicate carvings. Near the feet of the idol, on the right side, is the mushaka (mouse).
Since this idol was discovered in the sea, the Government of Maharashtra had attempted to claim authority over it; however, due to strong opposition from the villagers, the government finally relented and accepted the villagers’ wish to keep the idol in this very village. A few years ago, this idol was re-consecrated in a newly constructed temple in Burondi village, located a short distance from the Savarde temple. Every year, the Maghi Utsav is celebrated here on a grand scale. The festival begins with the Kakad Aarti at five o’clock in the morning. The Janmotsav of Ganpati is celebrated between twelve and twelve-thirty in the afternoon. Following this, Mahaprasad is distributed to all the devotees from the entire village.
