Temple Itinerary & Overview

The village of Wai (formerly known as Viratnagari), situated on the banks of the Krishna River in Satara district, is renowned as ‘Dakshin Kashi’. In this village, blessed by the presence of the Pandavas, there are two ancient and famous temples of Mahadev: the Bhadreshwar Temple on the north bank of the Krishna River, and the Wakeshwar Temple on the south bank. It is said that Lord Brahma performed severe penance at the very spot where the Bhadreshwar Temple now stands. He received auspicious (bhadra) fruits from his penance, and thus the temple came to be known as Bhadreshwar.

There is a legend associated with the Bhadreshwar Temple that after completing their period of exile, the Pandavas sought refuge in Viratnagari during their one year of incognito living. Due to the rocky terrain in Viratnagari, at the foothills of the Sonjai Hill, there was a scarcity of water. At that time, Bhima struck the ground, and water gushed forth, enriching the area. The eleventh chapter of the Sahyadri Khanda in Vyasa Muni’s Skanda Purana mentions the Bhadreshwar Temple located here on the banks of the Krishna River.₹

The Bhadreshwar Temple is surrounded by a high stone rampart. There are twenty-five to thirty stone steps leading from the riverbed to the temple. In the ancient tree platform (para) in front of the temple, there are four niches containing idols of various deities. For the convenience of devotees, a tin shed has been built around this platform. Near the temple, there is a large, monolithic black stone idol of Nandi. The temple comprises a Darshan Mandap (viewing hall), a Sabha Mandap (assembly hall), and a Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). The wooden pillars in the Darshan Mandap here feature intricate carvings. Its design gives the impression of an old mansion. However, the Sabha Mandap has stone pillars in the Hemadpanti style, and the construction above them is also in the same style. To the left of the Garbhagriha’s entrance, in a niche, is an idol of Shri Ganesha. The lalatabimba (forehead beam) of the Garbhagriha also features a sculpture of Shri Ganesha. In the center of the Garbhagriha is a square-shaped Shivlinga made of black stone. During Mahashivaratri, hundreds of devotees gather here to collectively recite the Shivlilamrut scripture. This tradition has been ongoing for many years.

Opposite the Bhadreshwar Temple, at some distance, on the other bank of the Krishna River, is the Wakeshwar Temple. There is a legend associated with this temple that the Pandavas built it so that Draupadi could perform her worship. When the Pandavas were living incognito in Viratnagari, Draupadi used this ghat for bathing. Therefore, the Pandavas built this temple near the ghat.

The Wakeshwar Temple is situated at one end of Wai village in a picturesque natural setting. It has a strong stone rampart, similar to that of a fort. Upon entering through the main gate, one first sees a Nandi carved from black stone. A little further inside, there is another Nandi outside the temple. The temple’s structure includes a separate Nandi Mandap, a Sabha Mandap, and a Garbhagriha. The Sabha Mandap of this entirely stone-built temple has twenty-four stone pillars, with floral sculptures carved on their upper parts. Near the entrance of the Garbhagriha, on the left side, is an ancient, monolithic stone idol of Shri Ganesha. To enter this Garbhagriha, one must descend steps from the Sabha Mandap. This somewhat irregularly shaped black stone Shivlinga is square. Water flows from this linga throughout all twelve months. In a niche in the wall opposite the Shivlinga is an idol of Parvati. The water seeping from the Shivlinga is collected through a channel into a pond within the temple premises.

A unique feature of this temple is the various elephant sculptures carved on its exterior. Elephants symbolize prosperity. Therefore, it is believed that this area must have been prosperous since ancient times. Additionally, there are intertwined sculptures of two demons and two deer, whose heads face opposite directions and are joined at the belly. Sculptures of a sadhaka (spiritual seeker) and distinctive petal sculptures, both inside and outside of flowers, are carved here. The lower part of the temple is built of stone, while the spire (kalasa) is constructed using lime and bricks.

Due to the dense trees in the temple premises, the chirping of various birds can be heard, making the atmosphere here feel serene. Near the platform of the large Peepal tree in the temple courtyard, there is a Shivlinga and a Nandi. At some distance from there, in a corner, there is a square area with a small door. It is said that this might be Draupadi’s bathing place. Additionally, there is a small temple of Vitthal-Rukmini in the temple courtyard.
