Temple Itinerary & Overview

There are many Shiva temples in the Tuljapur taluka. It is said that in some of these temples, Shri Rama worshipped Mahadeva during his forest exile, while others were established by him. It is believed that Shri Rama also worshipped at the ancient Mudgaleshwar Mahadeva Temple in the village of Sindphal, located near Tuljapur city. Experts believe this stone temple, built in the Hemadpanti architectural style, dates back about one thousand years. The intricate carvings and architectural design underscore the antiquity of this temple.

Legend has it that during his forest exile, after Ravana abducted Sita, Shri Rama worshipped Mahadeva at this temple while traveling south in search of her. According to this legend, the temple is said to be from the Ramayana era. However, some scholars believe that the temple is called Mudgaleshwar because it was established by Sage Mudgala, the author of the Mudgala Purana.

The road leading to the temple is adorned with natural beauty, and the first welcome arch stands at its entrance. On both sides of the road, there are two pillars each, topped with a balcony, and in the center of the balcony, there is a replica of a Shiva Linga. The temple’s courtyard, paved with paver blocks, houses stone idols of local deities, Naga sculptures, Shiva Lingas, Nandi sculptures, and Saptamatrika stones. Additionally, there are small shrines and samadhis of local deities here. Seats are provided around the courtyard for devotees to sit. In front of the Mudgaleshwar Temple stands a circular stone lamp tower (Deepmal).

The temple, situated on a platform (jagati) about three feet high, consists of a Sabha Mandapa (assembly hall), Antarala (vestibule), and Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). There are five crescent-shaped steps leading to the entrance of the Sabha Mandapa. Inside the hall, there are six ornate pillars at the front. Standing on square bases, these pillars transition into various geometric shapes such as squares, hexagons, octagons, and circles as they rise. At the top of the pillars are square capitals, followed by arched brackets. Beams rest on these brackets, and the roof is supported by these beams. On the side walls of the Sabha Mandapa, there are relief sculptures of banana trees and sculptures of door guardians (dwarapalas) holding snakes in both hands. Besides the main entrance, there are two additional doors on the left and right sides of the hall. The Sabha Mandapa features four ornate pillars on both the left and right sides, with circular lotus carvings on the ceiling.

The entrance to the Antarala is flanked by door guardian sculptures and side niches. The front walls feature two ornate pillars on each side, with two more at the entrance. All circular pillars stand on square bases. The pillars are decorated with octagonal ring patterns at the bottom and vertical fluting above. At the top of the pillars are capitals and brackets. In the center of the Antarala floor is a turtle sculpture, and in front of it, on a pedestal, is the idol of Nandi. A moon-shaped carving lies on the floor before the entrance to the Garbhagriha. The door frames of the sanctum feature guardian sculptures at the bottom, followed by vine, pot, pillar, and floral motifs. The lintel (lalatabimba) features an auspicious deity, and the archway is adorned with miniature spire sculptures. Inside the Garbhagriha, a Shiva Linga is placed in the center of the floor, and an idol of Parvati rests on a Vajra-pitha against the back wall. The sanctum also houses a brass mask of Mahadeva, behind which stands a five-hooded brass Naga holding a canopy.

The roof of the temple is surrounded by a parapet. On the roof of the Garbhagriha, there are Nandi sculptures at all four corners, and in the center, there is a three-tiered circular spire (shikhara). Each of the three tiers of the spire contains eight niches with deity idols. At the top of the spire are eight Urushringa-style miniature spires, a central stupi, and finally, the kalash and flag.

Mahashivratri is the main annual festival celebrated here with great enthusiasm. On this day, the deity is worshipped with a Laghurudra Abhishek. Afterward, the deity is beautifully decorated, and the temple is opened for devotees to have darshan. Throughout the day, programs such as bhajans, kirtans, music, and religious discourses are organized. During the month of Shravan, the temple sees a large influx of devotees. Throughout this month, the deity is decorated in various forms for worship. Thousands of devotees visit during both festivals to seek blessings and fulfill their vows.
