Keshav is one of these popular names, and a famous temple dedicated to this deity is located at Ajegaon in the Hingoli district. The name Keshav means the Lord with beautiful hair, and devotees believe that the deity here is ‘Jagrut’ (awakened) and grants their prayers. It is a widely held belief that the Keshavraj of this place removes the physical, mental, and financial troubles of his devotees.
The legend regarding the idol at the Keshavraj Temple in Ajegaon states that during the time of Saint Namdev Maharaj, this idol was in the Keshavraj Temple at Narsi, located nearby. Namdev’s father, Dama Shimpi, was a devotee of Keshavraj. Every day, he would worship Keshavraj and offer Naivedya (food offering). Once, he had to go out of town for some work, so Namdev’s mother asked young Namdev to offer the Naivedya to the Lord. Namdev had a childlike innocence and believed that the Lord would drink the milk offered to Him. However, when the Lord did not drink the milk even after the offering, young Namdev became disappointed and repeatedly requested the Lord to drink it.
Namdev told the Lord that he would keep banging his head here until the Lord drank the milk. To fulfill the innocent insistence of Namdev, the Lord had to drink the milk at that moment. From that day on, whenever Namdev offered Naivedya, the Lord would drink the milk. Once, while the Lord was drinking the milk, He sensed someone approaching the temple, so He hurriedly touched the hot milk to His lips. This caused blisters to form near the Lord’s lips. The marks of those blisters are still shown today.
When Muslim invaders targeted the temples in this region, the devotees from Narsi hid the idol underground to keep it safe. Years later, this idol was found in the fields of Kesapuri, a short distance from Narsi. At that time, everyone wanted to take this beautiful idol to their own village. Arguments ensued over this. Finally, it was unanimously decided that whoever could lift the idol would take it to their village. Many tried, but no one could lift the idol. At that time, Madhavrao Deshmukh, a staunch devotee of Pandurang from Ajegaon, performed a proper ritualistic worship of the idol and requested the Lord to come to Ajegaon. Following this, he was able to lift the idol with ease. Seeing this, everyone was astonished, and it was unanimously decided to install the idol at Ajegaon. Devotees brought the idol to Ajegaon with great fanfare and installed it there. Subsequently, a temple was built on this site.
The Keshavraj Temple is located in the central part of Ajegaon. There is a large open assembly hall (Sabhamandap) in front of the temple. A tin shed has been erected over this assembly hall for the convenience of the devotees. This temple, situated on a high plinth, consists of an assembly hall and a sanctum sanctorum (Garbhagriha). Built entirely of stone, the enclosed assembly hall of this temple features stone pillars. In the assembly hall, in front of the entrance to the sanctum, there is a stone idol of a tortoise (Kurma) on the floor. A queue system has been arranged in the assembly hall to manage the crowd of devotees. In the sanctum, on a high pedestal, stands the one-and-a-half-foot-tall, beautifully carved idol of Keshavraj. The Lord holds a lotus, a conch, a discus, and a mace resting downwards in His hands. The idol has silver eyes and a crown on its head. On the back slab above the idol, the Dashavatara (ten incarnations) are carved, and on both sides below, the attendant deities are carved.
Grand festivals are held at this temple on Ashadhi Ekadashi, Kartiki Ekadashi, and Gokul Ashtami. The villagers of Kesapuri come to Ajegaon for the Darshan of Keshavraj on these occasions. It is said that if there is no rain in the Kesapuri region, the villagers organize a Dindi (procession) and come to Ajegaon. It has been the experience of the villagers to this day that after coming here and praying to the Lord, it rains.
