Temple Itinerary & Overview

When travelling from the Pune-Bengaluru highway towards Mumbai, after crossing Nasrapur, one reaches Dhangawadi village. Right next to the highway, stands the ancient temple of Adabalsiddhanath. It is believed that when the Pandavas were in Agyatvas (exile in disguise), a battle took place here with the Kauravas to rescue the cattle wealth of the local king. This temple is believed to be situated on that very battlefield.

Although located very close to the highway, the temple premises exude a serene and tranquil atmosphere. There are archways (kamans) to enter the temple from the South and West. On the western archway stands a colossal Peepal tree. Bearing the weight of this ancient Peepal tree, which has spread over many years, this archway still stands strong and firm.

Upon entering the temple courtyard through the southern archway, one is greeted by Nandi. Adjacent to Nandi is a small stone Deepmaal (lamp tower). On this southern archway, one can see an idol of an ascetic (tapasvi) seated in meditation, accompanied by a horse. A similar idol is also visible inside. However, it is said that these statues were installed in recent times. The temple premises are densely covered with trees, providing shade and coolness even during summer. Within these temple premises, there are also temples dedicated to Lord Datta and Shani Dev.

In recent times, improvements have been made in the temple courtyard, with paving laid for the convenience of devotees. Straight ahead, there is a small doorway. The inner Sabhamandap (assembly hall), carved out of stone like a cave, is supported by four pillars. Perhaps because it was built on a battlefield, this temple is simple and unadorned. Much intricate artistry is not visible here. Although the temple’s Sabhamandap appears to be carved out of stone, the Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) is a constructed structure. At the center of the dome, built with stone masonry, there is a floral design. A Trishul (trident) is carved on the entrance of the Garbhagriha. Two idols are visible inside the Garbhagriha. One is in a male form, and the other in a female form. These idols are believed to be of Lord Krishna and Arjuna, who was in female form during his exile (Agyatvas).

The legend associated with the temple states that when the Pandavas were in Agyatvas, the Kaurava army abducted the cows of the King of Wai. Arjuna, in female form, and Lord Krishna intercepted them. They fought with the Kauravas and rescued all the cows. This temple, built in remembrance of that event, is known as Adabalnath. However, according to some, Adabalnath is a form of Lord Bhairavnath, who is enshrined here with His consort.

A grand Yatra (fair/pilgrimage) of Adabalnath is held here on the Purnima (full moon day) of the Chaitra month. This Yatra also features the Bagad ritual. For this, villagers from the surrounding areas, as well as citizens settled far away for work, make it a point to attend. Mahaprasad is served at the temple every Sunday and on every Purnima. Different varieties of Mahaprasad are offered each time. The Mahaprasad, which begins at eleven o’clock in the morning, continues until the last devotee arrives.
