Devotees believe that the Gayatri Mantra is the first divine sound to resonate in the universe. Today, millions of seekers across the country are striving to achieve spiritual elevation by chanting the Gayatri Mantra. Thousands of Gayatri Shaktipeeths are active across the nation, where daily Agnihotra and Gayatri Mantra sadhana are performed. One such famous Gayatri Shaktipeeth is situated in the city of Hingoli. Hundreds of devotees perform Gayatri sadhana at this Gayatri Peeth. Devotees believe that visiting this place brings mental peace and the experience of spiritual bliss.
This location in Hingoli is a branch of the Gayatri Shaktipeeth in Haridwar. This organization has over six thousand centers in India. It is not just an organization but a mass movement. Seekers here state that the main objective of this movement is the preservation of Agnihotra, Yajna, and culture. According to a legend regarding Gayatri Devi, once a dispute arose between Lord Brahma and his wife Savitri, leading Savitri to refuse to sit for the Yajna with Brahma. This angered Lord Brahma. Since a Yajna cannot be performed without a wife, he requested Indra to find him another wife. Indra suggested a virtuous daughter of a cowherd to Brahma as his wife. On the advice of Lord Vishnu, Brahma married this maiden. She is Mother Gayatri. She is the mother of the four Vedas and the presiding deity of all knowledge. According to one belief, Gayatri Devi manifests in three forms throughout the day. In the morning, she is ‘Bala Brahmi’, of crimson complexion, holding a rosary and a water pot; in the afternoon, she is the youthful ‘Vaishnavi’, holding a conch, discus, and mace; and in the evening, she is the elderly ‘Shivani’, riding a bull and holding a trident, a noose, and a skull.
This Gayatri Shaktipeeth is located along the main road of the city. The temple has a strong boundary wall and an arch-like entrance. There is a beautiful garden in the temple courtyard, where various types of medicinal and ornamental plants have been planted. Seats have been installed in the premises for devotees to sit. The site includes a three-story well-equipped building, a cafeteria, a pilgrim residence (Bhakt Niwas), an Annachhatra (free kitchen), a library, residences for the Mahant and attendants, the temple office, and a hall for various programs.
In the courtyard, there is a spacious Yajnashala where Yajnas are organized daily. Special Yajnas are held here during festivals and celebrations. In this Yajnashala, which is open on three sides, a beautiful painting of Mother Gayatri is depicted on the back wall, while a Yajna Kund is situated in the center of the floor. The roof of the Yajnashala is supported by circular pillars. Further ahead is the two-story Gayatri Temple. The ground floor is completely open on three sides. A painting of Mount Kailash is depicted on the back wall here. A Shiva Linga is enshrined on a marble pedestal on the ground floor. To the left and right of the Shiva Linga are two canopies (Meghdambaris) built of marble stone. Each canopy has six ornate pillars and is topped by a hexagonal spire. There are Amalakas and Kalashas on the spires. These two canopies house the samadhis of the late Mahant and Gurumata. There are spacious stairs on both sides to reach the upper floor of the temple. There are iron safety railings on both sides of these stairways. The upper floor is structured with a Sabha Mandap (assembly hall) and a Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). The enclosed Sabha Mandap has windows for light and ventilation. The roof of the Sabha Mandap is supported by walls and has brass bells hanging from it.
An Antarala (vestibule) has been created in front of the entrance to the Garbhagriha by installing iron safety railings. The entrance to the Garbhagriha is simple. It has transparent mesh doors on the outside and ornate wooden doors on the inside. This design of the entrance makes it easy for devotees to have darshan of the Goddess even when the temple is closed. Inside the Garbhagriha, a single-faced, two-armed marble idol of Mother Gayatri is installed on a marble Vajrapitha. The Goddess holds the Vedas in one hand and a drinking vessel in the other. Adorned with various clothes and ornaments, the idol wears a golden crown. On both sides of the idol, there are stacks of pots (Kumbhas) on the Vajrapitha. In front of the Vajrapitha is a sculpture of a swan, the vehicle of the Goddess. Portraits of Gurumata and Gurudev are placed in the Garbhagriha. There is a circumambulation path (Pradakshina Marg) around the exterior of the Garbhagriha. On the roof of the Garbhagriha, there is a square spire that tapers upwards. At the top of the spire, there are two Amalakas placed one above the other, topped by a Kalasha.
Gayatri Jayanti is the main annual festival here. The Gayatri Prakatotsav (manifestation day), which falls on the Shukla Ekadashi of the Jyeshtha month, is celebrated here with great enthusiasm. On this occasion, special programs such as Yajnas, bhajans, music, discourses, kirtans, and Mahaprasad are organized. Apart from this, daily routines like Yajnas, meditation, and discourses are regularly conducted at the Shaktipeeth. Devotees can have darshan of Gayatri Devi in this temple daily from 5 AM to 12 PM and from 4 PM to 8 PM.
