While there are many points (sites) that beckon tourists here, this region also holds significant historical and religious importance. The Kartik Swami Temple, located in the caves at Shri Kshetra Rajpuri near Panchgani, is considered one of the most important temples in the Mahabaleshwar taluka. This temple, a place of faith for thousands of devotees, has been granted ‘C’ class pilgrimage site status by the state government.
On the Wai-Panchgani road, before reaching Panchgani, there is a village called Dandeghar on the left side. Shri Kshetra Rajpuri is about seven kilometers from here. This village is situated at the junction of three talukas: Jawali, Wai, and Mahabaleshwar. This village is also called ‘Mini Panchgani’ because it has a plateau similar to the famous Table Land of Panchgani (a plateau/flat surface on a mountain). This plateau is a replica of Panchgani’s Table Land. Although it is somewhat smaller compared to Panchgani, thousands of tourists visit this village to enjoy the nature here. It is said that the caves and the Kartik Swami temple within them date back to the Pandava era.
Generally, one has to climb a mountain to see caves; however, to reach the Kartik Swami temple at Rajpuri, one must descend about 75 steps from the village to reach the caves located in the valley. It is said that Rashtrasant Gadge Baba built this stairway in 1943 with the help of the local Dalit community. Gadge Baba stayed here for 15 days during this time. After descending the stairs, one sees the caves on the right and a deep valley on the left. Near a large rock on the left side of the caves, there is a marble samadhi of a saint. A waterfall that cascades behind this samadhi during the monsoon season enhances the beauty of this area. The various forms of nature here delight the mind.
In the first cave of these caves, there is a vihara containing an idol of Renuka Devi. In front of this vihara are three water tanks: Mallikarjun, Dattakund, and Vishnukund. In one of these, water flows from a cow-mouth (Gomukh). Two caves adjacent to this one are connected from the inside. They contain an idol of Lord Vishnu. It is said that Gagangiri Maharaj resided in this Vishnu cave. He performed penance here for many days. In the adjacent cave, there are some hero stones (Veergal), Sati stones, and idols of various deities. Similar hero stones can also be seen near the banyan tree outside the caves. The fourth cave is small in size. It contains a Shiva Linga, and idols of Ganesha and Bhavani Mata. In front of this cave is a carved Nandi, whose ornaments and graceful posture are distinctive. In the vihara of the last cave, there is a two-and-a-half-foot-tall idol of Kartik Swami. This idol, carved from black stone, is beautiful. In this idol, Kartik Swami is shown mounted on a peacock. All these five caves are known by the name of Kartik Swami. According to scholars, these caves were carved between the tenth and eleventh centuries.
It is said that the Ganges has descended into the water of the three tanks in front of these caves, and its importance is equal to the water at the holy confluence in Prayag. Devotees believe that bathing in these tanks destroys the sins of many lifetimes and eliminates bodily ailments. There is also a specific method for bathing in these tanks. According to this, one should take a bucket of water from each of the three tanks on Saturday morning to bathe, and then take five circumambulations (pradakshina) around an Audumbar tree before having the darshan of Kartik Swami.
It is said that this process should be repeated on Mondays and Thursdays, i.e., three days a week. Following this, many devotees come here to bathe in the holy water of the tanks on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
Women are not permitted to enter this temple. Only on the occasion when Krittika Nakshatra and Tripurari Purnima fall on the same day are women allowed to have the darshan of Kartik Swami here. Such an auspicious occasion occurs once every three years.
At this time, thousands of women and devotees come here for darshan. Devotees are allowed to enter the cave premises only from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
