Temple Itinerary & Overview

Balappa was a devoted disciple of Swami Samarth of Akkalkot, who is considered the fourth and complete incarnation of Lord Dattatreya. Swami had gifted his *Chinmaya Padukas* (divine sandals) to Balappa and instructed him to build an independent Math in Akkalkot. This Math is known today as Guru Mandir. Along with Swami’s *Chinmaya Padukas*, this Math houses his *Shejghar* (sleeping chamber) and many of his vintage photographs. Devotees believe that Swami’s footprints can still be seen on the floor of the Math’s *Sabhamandap* (assembly hall). In this same hall, Swami is laid to rest on a cot after the night *Aarti*, covered with a blanket.

Shrimant Saraf Balappa was originally a Yajurvedi Brahmin from the Dharwad district of Karnataka. At the age of thirty, a sense of renunciation arose in him, and he felt a deep longing to meet his Sadguru. After performing his eldest daughter’s wedding and his son’s *Munja* (thread ceremony), he set out in search of a Guru and reached the holy site of Gangapur. He performed *Anushthana* there for two months. After receiving a divine vision instructing him to “Go to Akkalkot and serve Swami,” he arrived in Akkalkot. Swami Samarth was immensely pleased to see him. Living in Akkalkot, Balappa Maharaj served Swami with unwavering devotion. Swami gifted Balappa a *Kafni* (robe), *Padukas*, a *Danda* (staff), and a *Nishan* (flag), and ordered him to establish a Math under an Audumbar tree. This Math later became famous as Guru Mandir. Balappa Maharaj served Swami for 22 years and lived for another 32 years after Swami’s *Nirvana*.

The premises of Balappa Maharaj Math are vast, surrounded by grand stone ramparts. One enters the temple courtyard through a two-story gateway set within these walls. The gateway features pillar branches on both sides and arched lintels above. A sculpture of Lord Ganesha is carved on the lintel of the entrance, with a *Kirtimukh* below it. There is a *Nagarkhana* (drum house) on the upper floor of the gateway. The structure of the Math consists of a *Sabhamandap* and a *Garbhagriha* (sanctum sanctorum). The two-story *Sabhamandap* has wooden pillars supporting a balcony, all connected by arched designs. Many vintage photographs of Swami Samarth are displayed on the upper sections of these pillars.

In the front part of the *Sabhamandap* lies the *Samadhi* of Gangadhar Maharaj, who succeeded Balappa Maharaj as the head of the Math. To the right of the *Garbhagriha* is the *Samadhi* of Gajanan Maharaj Shivpure of Akkalkot, who succeeded Gangadhar Maharaj. Due to this Guru-disciple lineage, the Math is called Guru Mandir. A miracle occurred here on November 25, 2017. Following the renovation of the Math’s roof, the old floor tiles were to be replaced with granite. On the very day the work was to begin, Swami’s footprints appeared on the tiles. Consequently, the work was halted, and the original tiles were preserved. Even today, Swami’s footprints can be seen on these tiles, which have been marked for the benefit of devotees. The cot on which Swami Samarth used to rest, and before which Balappa Maharaj would sit, is kept in this *Sabhamandap*. After the night *Aarti*, Swami is symbolically laid to rest here with a blanket.

Next to Gangadhar Maharaj’s *Samadhi* in the *Sabhamandap* is the original photograph of Swami Samarth, taken in 1872 by an official from the American Kodak Company. It is said to be the only photograph capturing Swami Samarth with all his disciples. The *Garbhagriha* is situated four steps above the *Sabhamandap*. In the center of this sanctum lies the *Samadhi* of Balappa Maharaj, adorned with his metal mask and a serpent idol. Additionally, the *Garbhagriha* houses an idol of Swami Samarth and the original *Chinmaya Padukas* that Swami gifted to Balappa Maharaj, with which he established this Math.

There is a Ram temple in the courtyard of the Math. *Kakad Aarti* is performed daily at five in the morning, and the evening *Aarti* takes place between seven and eight. Festivals such as Guru Purnima, Datta Jayanti, and Swami Jayanti are celebrated here with great enthusiasm. *Annadan* (offering of food) is provided to devotees daily.
