Temple Itinerary & Overview

The Mudhai Mata Temple in Deur, Satara district, is famous as the Vaishno Devi of Maharashtra. A place of faith for millions of devotees, one must descend 25 feet down a flight of stairs and enter the sanctum sanctorum through a small entrance measuring just one and a half feet square to seek the blessings of the Goddess. Inside the sanctum, there is a self-manifested (Swayambhu) idol of the Goddess adorned with vermilion, and the sanctum itself is carved out of a single monolithic rock. Devotees believe that this Goddess is highly awakened (Jagrut) and grants the wishes of those who pray with devotion.

The legend of the temple states that there is a village called Dahiwad near Deur. A devotee named Mudhoji Chavan from this village was a staunch follower of Tulja Bhavani. Because of this, he would unfailingly walk to Tuljapur every year to seek the Goddess’s blessings. One day, while Mudhoji was in Tuljapur, the Goddess appeared to him in a dream and said, “I am pleased with you; there is no need for you to come here anymore to see me. I myself will follow you to your village tomorrow.” Accordingly, Mudhoji set out for Dahiwad the next morning. However, upon reaching the village of Deur, he looked back to see if the dream he had was true. Due to the lack of faith shown by her devotee, there was a loud thunderclap, and the Goddess vanished. With the help of the villagers, Mudhoji excavated the site and found the idol of the Goddess in the ground. Instead of removing the idol, a temple was built on that very spot. The Goddess, who had come pleased by Mudhoji’s devotion, subsequently came to be known as Mudhai Devi.

Deur village is situated on the banks of the Vasna River in Koregaon Taluka. The village is famous for the awakened Mudhai Devi Temple and the Hemadpanti-style Vitthal Temple. Mudhai Devi is the family deity (Kuldevata) for many families in the region and is the presiding village deity (Gramdevata) of Deur. The temple is located in the center of the village. In front of the temple stand two tall lamp towers (Deepmalas). One can enter the temple courtyard by descending stairs from the entrance. The temple is structured with a main hall (Sabhamandap) and a sanctum sanctorum (Garbhagriha). To reach the sanctum from the hall, one must descend further stairs. The sanctum is like an underground chamber, accessible through a one-and-a-half-foot square entrance. A unique feature of this entrance is that no matter how large a person is, they can easily pass through it into the sanctum. The sanctum is spacious enough for five to six devotees to sit at a time. Due to the low height of the sanctum, devotees must sit on their knees to seek the Goddess’s darshan. Here, there is a three-and-a-half-foot tall Swayambhu idol of the Goddess covered in vermilion. The entire sanctum is carved from the same rock as the idol. Generally, such underground temples are places where sages performed penance or contain a Shiva Linga, but this temple is an exception.

Navratri is the grandest festival celebrated here. During these nine days, millions of devotees come to seek the Goddess’s blessings. The temple and its surroundings are illuminated with countless electric lights. Every day, the idol is adorned with various garments and ornaments. A palanquin procession (Palkhi) of the Goddess is taken out daily during this period. The honor of leading the Palkhi procession on the day of Dussehra belongs to the Chavan family of Wadgaon. Many newlyweds begin their married life by performing the ‘Gondhal’ ritual for the Goddess in this temple.

Apart from this temple, the 13th-century Vitthal Temple in Deur village is also a place of great reverence. Located on a mound near the village, this temple is built of black stone in the Hemadpanti style within a fortified wall. The entrance and threshold of the main hall are intricately carved with various sculptures. The pillars of the hall feature exquisite carvings. Many mythological scenes are depicted, and the Padmanabha idol here is particularly distinctive. In the sanctum, there are idols of Vitthal-Rukmini on a pedestal.
